(H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1 Empty
PostSubject: (H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1   (H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1 EmptySun Jan 20, 2013 11:01 pm

Austin took a deep breath as all the students filled in the class. It was his first day as a professor and he was excited yet nervous to teach potions.

The potions classroom was dark until Austin lit a fire to warm the cold dungeon and light the room. He could tell this room has not been warm in months.

Alas, the students filled in. "Welcome to your first potions class. "I am professor Austin Baxt."

The students' faces startled him, not knowing if they would like or hate this class. "In this class, I will teach you what potions are and by the end of this year, you will find yourself knowing how to make your own potion. I do not expect you all to be flawless in this class, but I do expect a select few to achieve higher expectations." he examined the students' faces.

"In this class, the rules are simple. Talk when you or the class are asked a question and don't when I speak. You don't test my patience, I won't have to be such a strict teacher. Every question answered satisfactory will earn house points and any talking as I speak and you will lose points.

I know that your previous professor, James Wayne, was.. well he was a jerk." he told the class straight up. "If you are curious, he fled the school after threatening to harm other professors. I am not like him."

"To start, tell me your definition of a potion?" he looked around the class, waiting for someone to call out.

(H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1 Empty
PostSubject: Re: (H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1   (H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1 EmptyMon Jan 21, 2013 10:41 am

When Jennifer walked into the Potions class, her eyes widened. It was WARM. It had never been warm in the few weeks she'd been at Hogwarts last term. Then again, it was a totally new teacher. And she was accidentally comparing him to Professor Wayne, but she couldn't help that. "Good morning, Professor," she said politely.

She went to sit down at a desk on the third row and took out her writing equipment and some potions books from her bag. They may not be needed, but it was good to be prepared, in her opinion. She could always just put them back in her bag if it was necessary.

Jen blushed a little when he talked about not being flawless. She was far from that, though she loved the subject a lot. She was probably the only one in the class who had already been at the school for a short while last term, so she felt she should be much better, but she wasn't at all. These thoughts were quickly abandoned when the man said that Wayne was a jerk. So true. She held back a giggle but couldn't help a tiny smirk at the words.

Defenition of a potion? Well it was...um...it was a...um....It was really hard to explain! After a moment of thought, Jennifer raised her hand. "A potion is a liquid with magical properties, commonly brewed in a cauldron," she said, before deciding to add to this. "The effect on the drinker depends on the potion."

Spencer eyed the new Potions professor, glad they didn't have to suffer through another term with that Wayne guy as their professor. True, Wayne was before Spencer's time, but Spencer had heard horror stories about the man, including a rumor that he used the Cruciatus Curse on Wade Malfoy! True, Spencer didn't like Wade much, but Wade didn't deserve that. A fist to the face, for sure. But not an Unforgivable.

As Professor Baxt asked the first question of the lesson, Spencer tried to think of an answer, but the blonde Slytherin girl next to him answered first before he could. And it was a hard one, too! Of course everyone knew what a potion was, but not everyone could put the definition into words. But the blonde did a pretty good job.

He leaned over and gave the Slytherin his trademark flirty grin. "Not bad." He whispered. "You got the looks AND the brains, don't you?" He figured the girl would respond to compliments. Most girls did.

(H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1 Empty
PostSubject: Re: (H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1   (H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1 EmptyMon Jan 21, 2013 12:12 pm

It was a week into lessons and the aristocrats' daughter was still excited for every lesson. It was easier than she thought it would be; leaving home. Then again, her parents were probably glad despite putting on the act that they would miss their 'darling daughter'. She missed her self proclaimed father much more than she did her actual parents. She was up early as usual, waiting in the Great Hall for lessons to start, finishing off her plate of eggs as she held her potions book in her lap. She vaguely remembered that along with Potions was that they had the class with the first year students, including the Gryffindors and from what she had heard, they were apparently snotty and arrogant kids. She didn't know them though, so she couldn't really judge. Some Slytherins, despite having welcomed her, some were in disbelief, or well rather, it was the other houses that was in disbelief of her personality. So different from Slytherins they had expected, but she let off more of a polite indifference.

The time came when classes were time to start, and she moved herself the way she was taught, elegantly with no room for any stumbles in her step, chin held high and back straight. Her azure eyes beamed with a light happiness with the excitement of what she was sure would quickly become one of her favourite subjects; Potions. It didn't take her long to get there, but when she did, she was one of the first.
"Good morning, Professor Baxt," she'd greeted, as she ambled into the classroom. Aurelia chose to sit in the middle, not wanting to be so close to the front, but not so close to the back of her chair and crossing one leg gracefully over the other, making sure her skirt was pulled over her knees as she waited for other students to file in.

After the blonde Slytherin girl--Jennifer--spoke, Aurelia raised her hand as well.
"Potions are magical liquids created by mixing various ingredients in a cauldron, according to a very specific set of instructions. They are brewed from ingredients with magical properties, and can be used as medicine, lethal poison or give the drinker various physical enhancements, such as an enhancement in strength or immunity from flames."

((Please just roleplay as if you are already in class and not late, please, it's a distraction))

"Very good, two answers." he took out a quill and wrote down something. "Mr. Quinn, please leave all social conventions outside of this classroom." he turned around and wrote something on the blackboard.

Professor Baxt

What is a potion?

The Basics--- Potions

"In your first year, you will learn about the basic types of potions and then in your second year, I will guide you through potion ingredients and how to handle them. Any questions so far?"

Jennifer glared at the total IDIOT next to her. He should go and hit on someone more in his league. Like Daisee Dursley. "In your dreams, Quinn," she hissed, turning her attention back to the professor. She smirked when he spoke to the Gryffindor boy. He probably wouldn't bother her much more, thanks to the nice professor man.

Listening carefully as the professor spoke more about what they would learn, Jen kicked Quinn under the table discreetly, just for good measure. Any questions? No, she didn't think so. Just if she could move seats. Away from that freak.

Spencer grinned at the professor's scolding, a little sheepish but by no means embarrassed. If he had a Sickle for every time he got chewed out for flirting with a girl..... Well, he'd have a lot more in Gringott's, that's for sure!

"Sorry, Professor!" He said casually. He slid a glance sideways at the Slytherin girl to see her glaring at him. He had to stifle a laugh as she hissed her supposed disinterest in him. Denial for sure. Just then, he winced as she kicked him in the shin.

"Playing footsie with me, Moss?" He whispered. He grinned as he winked cheekily at her. Oh yeah, she wanted him big-time.

Austin glared at Spencer, "Don't want your house to lose points, now do you?" he said. "Anyways, today I want to see your potential. You will be working on the Cure for Boils potion. Instructions are on the blackboard in the back of the room." he flicked his wand and writing on the backboard appeared:

Tip: When "waving your wand", try the best you can with a feeling of energy to the potion.

1.Add 6 snake fangs to the mortar.
2.Crush into a fine powder using the pestle.
3.Add 4 measures of the crushed fangs to your cauldron.
4.Heat the mixture to 250 for 10 seconds.
5.Wave your wand.
6.Leave to brew and return in 45 minutes.
7.Add 4 horned slugs to your cauldron.
8.Take the cauldron off the fire before adding the next ingredient.[1]
9.Add 2 porcupine quills to your cauldron.
10.Stir 5 times, clockwise.
11.Wave your wand to complete the potion.

"Ingredients can be found in the cupboards. Get busy!" he said.

Well, if the man didn't see everything. Wait, he didn't! Jennifer kicked him! Funny how he didn't see that, but cracked down on him! He decided to keep his mouth shut for now, though. He didn't want to get on the bad side of a professor quite so soon. Besides, the girl couldn't help herself. He suspected it was his animal magnetism that made him so irresistible.

He got up to get the required ingredients from the cupboard, hoping he had least had some potential. Although being a Hogwarts drop-out would no doubt add to his bad-boy charm, he wasn't ready to go quite so soon. Didn't want to give his mother a heart attack this young, after all.

PostSubject: Re: (H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1   (H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1 EmptyMon Jan 21, 2013 9:07 pm

Jen rolled her eyes at Quinn's accusation. He was disgusting and totally immature. There was no point stamping on his foot or anything, because he'd just annoy her more, most definitely. At least he was pretty close to losing house points. For Daisee's house. That would make her happy. Something to gloat about, anyway.

Cure for Boils potion? From what she remembered, this wasn't too hard to complete. A beginner's potion. It was their first lesson, so it wouldn't be. But then again, she did have a history of potion making going wrong. It just made her ashamed because her parents had both been great potioneers themselves and it felt like letting them down when she failed. Jennifer decided to do her very best in the lesson to please them, if they were looking down on her right then.

She charged straight for the cupboards, quickly gathering the ingredients listed on the board. When she was pretty sure she had everything, Jen went back to her place where she began to work attentively. Add six snake fangs to the mortar. She counted out six and added them to the mortar, before crushing them violetly with the pestle, the next instruction on the board. This was going to be the best potion she'd ever made.

Leah was extremely nervious for this class. She was good at cooking, but she had no idea if potions and cooking were one of the same. She gathered her ingredients and began the process that was written on the blackboard.

Emilio watched the potions professor, disinterested. He began by talking about some guy, who apparently had been a professor last year. Then he got into the actual lesson. Sneering as he saw the instructions, Em lazily meandered to the ingredients cabinet and took out some random bottles without reading the labels. He did, however, see a paket labeled "snake fangs." Interesting, he thought. He took the packages and flasks back to his desk and was disappointed to see that he'd actually maganed to pick up the right ingredients.

Taking out the snake fangs, he sullenly poured about six into his mortar and began crushing them. Em found that he was actually having fun smashing the little fangs. After pouring them into the cauldron, he looked at the dial for heat with some confusion. He didn't see a measure, so he turned it up as high as it could go and left it on for ten seconds. When he looked into his cauldron, green smoke billowed out. Coughing, he slumped in his seat and waited for the professor to call him out.

"Green smoke shouldn't come so vigoriously." Austin said, looking at the potion, "You crushed the snake fangs too much, it's alright, now you wait." he turned back to his desk.

"If you are finished with your potion, write a short reflective essay on the potion you just did."

(H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1 Empty
PostSubject: Re: (H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1   (H) Potions Class Y1 Lesson 1 EmptyWed Feb 20, 2013 8:37 am

Cure for Boils potion? Interesting, Aurelia thought to herself, silently musing as she jotted down the instructions to create the potion, checking over her notes several times to ensure that she had not omitted a single step. Doing so would be disastrous; she knew from personal experience that every single ingredient was essential to creating the perfect potion, as was the process of following the steps appropriately. Wandering over to the cupboards, Aurelia stood on tiptoe, lifting her petite frame higher in order to reach for the ingredients that had been specified. "Snake fangs, mortar, pestle, horned slugs, porcupine quills," she murmured quietly, checking off each item in her notes as she placed them carefully in her cauldron. Once she had collected all of the ingredients, she immediately strode back toward her seat, inspecting her equipment carefully before commencing the creation of her potion.

She counted and added the snake fangs into her mortar, and immediately began to pound the fangs with the pestle, gritting her teeth as she smashed the ingredient with great force, until it turned into a fine powder. Next, she took the crushed powder and poured into her cauldron, waiting until the mixture heated up to the appropriate temperature, for the right amount of time. Taking out her wand, she gave it a quick "swish and flick", feeling a burst of energy rush through the tips of fingers, past the wand and emitting itself as a jet of heat and energy in the direction of the potion. After going through the rest of the steps required, she had finally created the Cure for Boils Potion, and it didn't appear to have any major defects. With a small smile upon her face, she sauntered towards Professor Baxt, gesturing towards her cauldron as she spoke.
"Professor, is that alright?" questioned the girl.

As she awaited his response, she ambled back towards her desk, seating herself and pulling out the materials required for the remainder of the lesson--namely a piece of parchment, quill, and an ink bottle. Gazing downwards, she flipped through the pages of her desk, lowering her quill to the surface of her parchment as she began to scrawl across the papyrus.

Austin stood up and walked over to Aurelia's cauldron. "Merlin's beard! It's perfect!" he exclaimed, "An Outstanding for you, Aurelia! Great, you can work on your reflective essay now for homework." he walked back to his seat. "Everyone when you are done with your potion, you may leave and do your reflective essay for homework."

Marvolo sat silently in the back of the classroom as she brewed the potion slowly, when it came to the snake fangs she picked them up and looked at the small teeth the ivory shining in the dim dungeon light. "what a shame" she muttered before dropping them into the cauldron. As the potion simmered and gave sign it was done she sat back in her chair her hood obscuring her features she merely watched the class a sense of boredom filling her.
