Getting Acquainted with Your Broom [Year 1]

Luca had taught her how to do this when she was 7 years old. Vanessa stepped up to the broom, stuck out her hand and confidently said, "Up!" The broom flew up instantly and Vanessa wrapped her hand around its handle. She smirked around and saw the other students trying to get their broom to obey them. She shook her head and giggled. Then she looked up at Luca and smiled, waiting for reassurance from him.

Ryan's jaw dropped when he noticed Vanessa had already managed to master the task at hand. He looked down at the broom by his feet, "UP!" It finally flew up into his hand and he grabbed it. "About time, stupid broom."

Zander smiled at Vanessa when she instantly got her broom into her hand. He concentrated on his own broom, "Up." It wavered for a few seconds but id not fly up. "UP!" The broom's handle flew up and hit in the face, "OW!" He heard Vanesa laughing and smiled at her, "Shut up, Nessa." He said playfully.

Vanessa watched as the other students tried to master the skill she accomplished instantly. She saw Zanders broom attack his face and couldnt help but laugh, "Sorry Matthews. But you gotta admit, its funny."

Lauren did what the professor said and exclaimed, "Up!" The broom soared into the air, and Lauren was amazed.

Now, actual flying! All she had to do was say "UP!" and she'd be on the way to being the best at flying in the whole of Hogwarts! "Up!" Lyra beamed excitedly, and watched as the the broom wiggled a little bit, and hovered slightly, but didn't come up to her hand, as it already had for other students. With an impatient frown, she tried again but with the same result. Third time lucky, though! "Up!" she commanded firmly. Then it worked! It was a little bit of a surprise when the deformed broom flew up into her hand quickly. "I did it!"

Mariana ran down to the pitch. She was sweaty, out of breath and very very late. "Sorry Professor. Wont happen again." She noticed everyone else was already doing the lesson so she stepped up to a broom and did what everyone else was doing. She held out her hand and said, "Up!" She jumped slightly when the broom was suddenly in her hand. Was that supposed to happen? She looked around at the other students and saw her brother. She smiled softly and waved at him. But he totally ignored her.

Luca was glad that everyone had gotten the task done by now, especially Nessa who seemed to have retained everything he'd taught her. "Okay, okay. I want you to mount your brooms. Hold tight on to it though! It can sometimes lift you up if you're not careful." he told them as they all did so rather impatiently. Curious children. "Now, when you have a firm grasp of it, and your feet must be still touching the floor...you simply push yourself up lightly! Lightly!"

Vanessa climbed onto her broom and gripped tight to the handle. She pushed off and hovered up into the air. But when she tried to get back down, her broom didnt lower. It kept going higher! "Luca!" She was about 10 feet up in the air now "LUCA! DO SOMETHING!"

Persephone walked down to the pitch slowly, hoping that by the time she got to the class it would be over. Luck was not on her side though, as she got to the pitch and saw that people were getting on the brooms. She watched for a minute not saying anything, just seeing how the other kids were doing. When Nessa started screaming she frowned, if Nessa couldn't even get through the lesson with out a problem how was she going to?

Surely enough, Nessa hadn't listened to the instructions. Sighing, Luca brought his wand up and pointed at his sister; her broom lowered itself on command and Nessa was back on the ground. And there seemed to be another student! Late, but still safe. "Persephone Mason! It's a pleasure to have you with us!" he beamed at the sight of his friend's younger sister. "You missed the very beginning of the class, but that's okay. Come! Grab a broom and demand Up! for it to come to your hand. Go on, give it a try." He encouraged her.

Persephone looked at the man like he was crazy, but moved to do as he said. She was really regretting even coming to class. Well it was to late now, might as well buck up and get over it. Once she grabbed the broom and moved to her own place she quietly demanded, "Up." When it did nothing, she nearly let herself sigh in relief.

Vanessa shakily landed back on the ground thanks to he rbrothers help. She was terrified that she could have fallen. She had felt herself start to slip. She looked at her brother and sent him a silent thank you

Mariana climbed onto her broom and gently pushed off the ground, her broom hovered in the air and then she gently touched back down. She smiled with pride at her accomplishment.

Maddie shivered when the professor instructed them to start having a go at making the broom fly up into their hands. For a long moment, she just stood nervously, staring at the broom as though it might consequently disappear when she needed it to. Then she could leave and go and eat something. Eating always made her feel much, much better. But nothing happened, and she realised the quicker she made this work, the quicker she could leave.

It was only making it come up to her hand, not actually flying, so it would be alright. It had to be alright. When she saw someone get on their broom and fly up in the corner of her eye, Maddie bit her lip. Were they meant to actually fly? No, the professor had got the girl back down. She must have not followed the instructions right. But then another girl did it. Frowning, the Hufflepuff ignored it and decided to work on making friends with the broom.

"U-up," she stuttered nervously, but nothing happened. It wasn't surprising, really. Madeline KNEW she'd be really bad at flying. "Up," she repeated quietly. No, the broom didn't like her. He didn't want to be her friend. Maybe if she named him, he'd co-operate? "Up, Mr SnuggleWood!" she commanded. It worked! Maybe all brooms needed to be loved and cared for.

Luca walked around and inspected everyone's work. Some of them did really well, some of them sucked at it, which was more entertaining to watch than anything. "Okay, sadly, this is all I have for you today. Please practice that! As it will be a part of your grade for this year to be able to accomplish it." He told them, "You may stop by and borrow a broom for practice. Go now."
