Road to Nowhere [Open] Empty
PostSubject: Road to Nowhere [Open]   Road to Nowhere [Open] EmptyThu Jun 06, 2013 10:49 am

It was a dark and narrow corridor, candlelit, with no windows. Completely bare walls stood on both sides, and the slight curve of the hallway made it impossible to perceive its end. James started treading carefully, the sound of his footsteps breaking the sacred silence of the place. Somehow he knew that he needed to follow the path, that it would lead him to what he was yearning for. It was the key, the answer to all his questions.

He walked for minutes, or was it hours, but the world around him did not change. The same stone cage surrounded him, and his goal remained ever unreachable. Uneasy, he paced up. However, before long, he needed to stop in order to catch his breath. The floor suddenly shivered beneath his feet and he watched in horror as the walls began to move, closing in on him.

His heart pounding, he dashed forward. He sprinted tirelessly, ignoring the pain in his side, yet the passageway was more and more narrow every moment. Soon, he was forced to stop again. Not knowing what else to do, he desperately tried to keep the walls from joining. Turning sideways, he pushed, with his hands, legs, his entire body, yet his effort was in vain. "HELP!" he screamed, feeling the cold touch of stone on his back. Only utter silence responded.

His eyes wide open, James drew long breaths, trying to calm down. Cold sweat ran down his temples and his back. He felt a weakness in his legs, and leaned against the wall to avoid falling. When his heart had returned to a nearly normal rate and his hands had stopped trembling, he gazed around. The corridor was bathed in moonlight that filtered from a set of high windows. A collection of portraits lined the walls, all peacefully sleeping in their frames. James failed to recognize the place, yet there were so many similar hallways in the giant castle that it didn't surprise him.

The soft touch of the carpet covering the floor made him realize he was barefoot, and still clad in his blue pyjamas. Sighing, he was about to head back to his common room, when footsteps suddenly echoed faintly in the distance.

Morgana knew she shouldn't be awake now. She should simply go to sleep, but she just couldn't fall asleep. So she left the common room and the dungeon, walking as silently as she could through the halls and the corridors. It wasn't hard; she hadn't taken on her shoes, so she was walking around in only her socks. She was wearing her normal uniform, though, but without the vest and tie.

She liked walking in bit castles, she had always done so, but this was the only time she had the chance to walk in one in complete darkness, and it was so soothing. She smiled and enjoyed the walk through a corridor she hadn't been in yet. And lord, it was so long! She frowned but simply continued walking. She was getting pretty curious when she saw portraits in the distance. Her feet made more sound here than they had earlier, and she tiptoed as she best could, but it was weird. As if you had to make sound while walking there.

She didn't care though. But then she saw a shadow. She stopped. What if it was a teacher? Was she really over curfew? She wasn't sure, and she didn't have a watch. She walked a bit closer, looking around and then blinked. It was James.

"Hey," she said calmly and then blinked at the echo that sounded.

The sound grew louder and louder. Starting to panic, James glanced around, yet there was nowhere to hide. He thought about running the other way, but his legs were too feeble and he probably wouldn't get very far. Perhaps it was Professor Umbranox. The teacher had already found him once in the same situation and had been kind enough to escort him back to Ravenclaw Tower. Yet not all of them shared the same benevolence.

A silhouette suddenly appeared from behind the corner. He couldn't recognize it in the ambient obscurity, until it walked in front of a window. "Morgana" James breathed, relieved. "What... what are you doing here?" he added in a whisper.

Aylee stared at the ceiling. She just couldn't fall asleep, not matter what she did. She had went through two books earlier that night but no success. It wasn't until she heard a scream she stood up straight. What was that? A bit scared, she slipped on her uggs and left the Common Room.

The voice she had heard was far but it sounded like someone yelling 'HELP!'. Why would someone yell that at this time of night? Was someone attacking Hogwarts? Were some dangerous creatures found lurking around? Did the person just get scared for nothing?

Many questions passed through her head as walked through the corridors, scared and excited at the same time. She was wearing a light blue nightgown which was really long. Her hair was tied up in a plait like she usually did before she went to sleep. She clutched her small brown satchel which she carried everywhere.

As she turned around a corner, Aylee heard a voice. Then she saw two silhouettes and immediately wondered if they were teachers. Too short, she thought. Walking closer towards them, she recognized James and Morgana. She knew James, he had been her friend since her first year but Morgana she had met only twice. Thrice, counting this time.

"Hello," she whispered. "What are you doing here?"

Morgana found it amusing how relieved James sounded when he saw that it was her. She shrugged and looked innocent. "I couldn't sleep. I had to walk a bit. If I walk aimlessly around, it usually makes me tired enough to get some sleep," she said lowly, not liking the echo that sounded if she didn't.

She heard soft shoes hit the ground behind them, and she looked behind herself and smiled when she saw that Aylee didn't seem to be getting any sleep either. "Hello," Morgana said to her and sighed. "Probably the same as you; I couldn't sleep at least, but I have yet to hear James' excuse," she said kindly, looking at James for an answer.

Dangerous habit. James couldn't help thinking after listening to Morgana's reply. Yet before he could say anything, another figure emerged from the darkness. Aylee looked like she had just woken up.

He nodded at her while Morgana explained the reason for her presence. When she asked the same of James, his face turned even paler, if that was possible. "I..." he began, staring at the floor. He couldn't think of a witty response, so he decided to tell the truth. "I was sleepwalking."

Aylee smiled at Morgana. She had never known the Slytherin to be mean, just as mischevious as everyone else, probably. "I heard some noise," she admitted. "And I had nothing to do." She looked at James as he told them his excuse.

"Sleepwalking?" Aylee echoed. It wasn't unheard off to sleepwalk but she had never imagined it to be real. Shaking her head, she said, "Don't worry, my older brother Ethan used to sleepwalk a few times. He used to wake up the whole house with his bumping into the walls. It was funny." She grinned as she remembered her parents shaking her brother up so he would stop banging on the walls.

Morgana nodded in understanding at what Aylee said. She had believed she heard something as well, but she'd only thought it was a figment of her imagination. Maybe it hadn't been then. She frowned. She had walked up some stairs, but she had no idea that they would be so close to the Ravenclaw Tower. Oh well...

She then frowned lightly. She hadn't experienced sleepwalking or even talking by anyone she knew, so it was all pretty new to her. But James seemed a bit ashamed of it. She didn't really get why. It was his body that acted, nothing could be helped when it came to that. But she didn't say so. She didn't want to scold him or anything, because she really didn't mind him being ashamed either, she just didn't get why.

"I've never met anyone who sleepwalks. It must be a bother, but it seems pretty cool as well. As if your brain can truly relax when you sleep, so your body still works so well. I mean, you gotta have a pretty inexhaustible brain to keep that going, right?" she pondered. Maybe that didn't even make sense at all. If it didn't, she blamed the nighttime.

"By the way, are we really close to the Ravenclaw Tower now? Because then I honestly wonder how on earth I winded up here," she asked them both with an innocent smile.

"I guess..." he muttered to Morgana's remark upon flashing a polite smile at Aylee. However, cool was certainly not the word he would choose to qualify it. Waking up in the middle of nowhere without any idea of how he got there or what he had been doing during his absence was far from pleasant. Not to mention the nightmares. They weren't always there, but when they were, it could get fairly exhausting.

"I have no idea." he admitted, looking around. "I was sleeping, remember?" he added with a tired grin. "Don't any of you recall how you got here?"

Morgana thought about it. She knew exactly how she had got there, but she had no idea how she winded up there. She looked down the hall from which she had come and pondered a bit about how she had managed to get so far up. She had walked two sets of stairs, one of which was the one down to the dungeon, so how on earth had she gotten here?

"I remember the way perfectly fine, but I only climbed two stairs, one of which was the one in the dungeon, so I'm really on the first floor, and then I just walked. And if Aylee heard your scream from the Ravenclaw Tower and I didn't hear it from the first floor, then I'm guessing that we're closer to the Ravenclaw Tower than the first floor... And I don't understand how," she said confused.

Aylee wasn't really listening to the conversation anymore. She was staring out of a nearby window. It was dark, probably around midnight. When she heard the word 'scream' she looked up, puzzled. "What?" she asked, then blushed as she realized that she had forgotten to keep her voice down.

"I think I was just imagining the noises," Aylee shrugged. She looked out of the window again, not really wanting to talk about how they all ended up here.

Scream? He thought that had only happened in his dream, but it was apparently not so, even though Aylee stated that the sound had been but a fruit of her imagination. "Perhaps you went though a secret passage." he tried to make sense of Morgana's disorienting explanation. He knew only of one, upon which he had stumbled by accident during his second year. Yet he was certain several more were concealed all over the giant castle.

"We just need to find the Grand Staircase." Easier said than done, James realized, as he had no clue about which way to go. "And preferably before someone finds us." he whispered.

Morgana smiled, that could be it. After all, it wasn't really hard to imagine that such a huge castle practically built by magic would have some magical passageways. Probably more than some. "That would be really cool. Problem is, I don't know where it began," she said with a soft chuckle.

She nodded and looked around. "Well, then I suggest we go back the way I came, because I remember the way to the staircases. Problem is, it'll be a long walk for the two of you from there and it's quite possible that you'll meet some teachers that way. Honestly, it's the way students remember at all..." she pondered about the ways they could take for a moment. Maybe Aylee knew a way?

Aylee looked back at the two and bit her lip. James suggested about a secret passage and Morgana mentioned going the way that she came. She thought hard. "I..." she started. Then she suddenly put her index finger to her lips and listened carefully. Were those footsteps she heard? No, just the wind. Aylee realized as she put down her finger again.

"I didn't really pay attention to the way that I came with," she admitted. She didn't ever remember coming along this corridor- this was definitely the first time. She wasn't sure she could remember which way she took from the Ravenclaw Tower. "Why don't we go the way you came?" Aylee asked, gesturing to Morgana. "We might meet a teacher but I'll take the risk."

"Let's go then." James sighed, seeing no other solution than to follow the path Morgana had used. "And if we stumble on a professor... well, we'll just have to think of something to say."

Morgana led the way, the two other Ravenclaws following her closely. The corridor suddenly grew darker as thick clouds concealed the moon, blocking the light it emitted. Reaching for his pocket, James realized it was empty. He had left his wand in his school robe. Cursing himself interiorly, he glanced at Aylee. She was in her nightgown as well. "Do you have your wands on you?" he asked the two girls.

Morgana gave a nod and started walking the way she had come from, the two others trailing behind. Then the moon was hidden and the corridor fell into darkness. Morgana blinked. She then made out James' silhouette when he asked if either of them had their wands. Morgana nodded.

"I do. I had no idea that the lumos-spell would come in handy so quickly. But, it is the only spell I know," she added softly. She had been practicing a lot on it, and the light had become really strong. She pulled out her wand and grinned. "Lumos," she said softly and the light spread through the corridor, but she tried to retract it a bit, making it dimmer. And she succeeded. She smiled at that. It wasn't good if it shone too brightly, a teacher might spot the light around the corner or something.

She then frowned. "Hey, James, what were you dreaming of?" she asked, totally ignorant to the fact that people might think it was too personal to discuss their dreams; she wouldn't be. So she thought no one would be, and didn't find her question weird at all, which the two others might.

"Impressive." James said admiringly, witnessing her spotless execution of the Wand Lighting Charm. "Good thing you paid attention in Professor Umbranox's class, otherwise this would have been a pretty scary walk." He still remembered the story of the Chamber of Secrets, and the giant snake that had attacked students all over the castle. The monster was dead now, yet he didn't dare imagine what other horrors roamed the hallways at night.

Why does she always have to be so curious? James wondered. "It was more of a nightmare." he replied, still shivering at the thought of it. He weighed stopping at that, concerned that they could think him crazy if he told them. But then again, it was only a dream. "I was in a corridor, similar to this one, except with no windows, no doors, no anything actually. And I walked and walked but the end was never in sight. Then the walls started closing on me. They were just about to crush me when I woke up." he told the whole story without stopping, as if to be rid of it. He was thankful for the ambient obscurity, which prevented Aylee and Morgana from seeing his expression. His mind tried to make sense of the nightmare, yet he was shortly forced to admit he had no idea what it could mean, if it held any significance in the first place.

PostSubject: Re: Road to Nowhere [Open]   Road to Nowhere [Open] EmptySat Jun 08, 2013 9:32 pm

Aylee nodded and slowly followed Morgana, staying behind the two. She tried to think of a good of excuse to say in case a teacher caught them. The three of them saying that they heard noises wouldn't do much good. Neither saying the 'I couldn't sleep' excuse. James would probably get away with his sleepwalking excuse, but what about her and Morgana? I'm here because I heard a sound and decided to investigate, Aylee thought. But would a teacher believe that? She sighed. I'll think about it when it happens, she thought.

When she realized that James asked if they had a wand on them, Aylee reached into her little satchel, remembering that she had put in her wand earlier. Too late. Morgana was already casting the Wand-Lighting Charm. She shrugged. Show off another time, Aylee told herself sternly.

She looked up as she noticed that Morgana and James were now talking about James's nightmare. Aylee didn't want to take part in that conversation so she dug into her satchel and took out a small packet of Muggle sweets she had got from her mum earlier that week. It was called 'Haribo' and had different flavoured and colourful sweets.

"Want one?" Aylee asked Morgana and James. She took out a handful of sweets and extended the palm of her hand, showing a small pile of sweets. "They sometimes keep me awake on long nights of homework." And sometimes when I have nightmares, Aylee added silently. She took one out of the small pile. It was shaped like a Coke bottle. Grinning at it, she put it in her mouth and sucked it. Delicious.

Morgana smiled softly. "Well, professor Umbranox is a really good teacher. I'm good at paying attention even if it is uninteresting, but it was interesting just to learn this spell. I mean, if that's it, then he has to be beyond interesting when we learn other spells, right?" she concluded.

She frowned lightly. "Hm... Sound pretty uncomfortable. I really don't like movies where the walls are moving. I don't want to imagine actually dreaming of it," she said with a sigh.

She then looked behind when Aylee offered what looked like sweets. She saw her take a bottle shaped one and noticed that Aylee liked it, so she went safe and took the same type. It tasted like rubber, but it tasted good even so. She was surprised at it. "Is it muggle sweets?" she asked softly.

She then thought about what James had said about reasons as to why they were late. Aylee had the 'she heard something and wanted to check it out', James had the 'sleepwalking' and she... Walking aimlessly around because she couldn't sleep... That wasn't gonna do it.

"Okay, I have an idea. What if James was sleepwalking, I am a first year and got lost before curfew, trying to find my way back, but just getting more and more lost, and then I screamed, waking up James, and Aylee hearing it, coming to find out what it was?" it was a bit far-fetched, she knew, but it could work. Possibly?

Haribo? He hadn't eaten those in months. "Thanks, Aylee." he whispered, taking a random sweet from the pack. It was a tiny red bear. He smiled when he remembered the way his sister used to decapitate them with her teeth before eating the rest of their body. "Yes, they're something like Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans, only with less bold flavours." he explained, turning to Morgana. "The one you took is Coke." He was usually the one demanding explanations to his wizard friends, it was amusing to be on the other end for once.

They turned right, then left but similar corridors just followed one another. James still had no idea where they were, but Morgana seemed to know the way. Just as they were passing by a suit of armour, she laid out her plan in case they were caught. "It could work." James replied, unconvinced. "But how do you explain the fact that Aylee heard you scream all the way from our common room when the professors patrolling the hallways didn't?"

Aylee grinned as Morgana took a sweet and ate it. It seemed a bit silly that wizards didn't know of Muggle sweets- especially since wizards live among Muggles. As James said something to Morgana about the sweets, Aylee took another one. It turned out to be the shape of an egg. Grinning, she put it in her mouth and sucked out the flavour. She loved doing that.

"We could say that Morgana was really near the Ravenclaw Tower?" suggested Aylee as the conversation turned to excuses. "And then we heard a noise and followed it? Then got lost? Completely?" Then she blushed as she realized that she had probably said too much. Aylee swallowed the sweet she had and tried to put the pile of sweets back in the packet without letting them fall to the floor. She did so and then wrapped the packer before putting it back in her satchel.

Morgana blinked. "Coke? Well, it was good. Weird, but good," she said. She had never really tasted muggle candy before, the reason being that she ought not eat candy at all. But one such small bottle couldn't hurt, could it? She wouldn't go completely crazy and hyper, would she? She hoped not. Honestly, as if they needed to make more noise either way.

She sighed. She could hear that James wasn't convinced by her suggestion, but honestly, what other choice did they have? And Aylee added to the suggestion, making it more steadfast, not that Morgana really had faith in it anyways. But honestly, they couldn't go crazily angry with a first year for getting lost in such a huge castle! Even so... Having wandered around for hours because she was lost, and she wasn't even wearing her entire uniform... Well, she could stand detention, she just didn't want any point deduction.

"It's not a very firm excuse, but it's the one we have. If we can't come up with something better, at least," she said softly.

James nodded. It might not be a perfect excuse, but they had no better option. In the end, it all depended on who would find them. Professors Umbranox or Vega would probably not prove very harsh. The caretaker, Andre, also seemed like a kind man, even though James had only briefly talked to him a few times. But he wasn't sure the same could be said about the strict Ashton Clark, or some of the new teachers he still didn't know that well.

As they emerged into yet another dark hallway, something suddenly materialized in front of them. Startled, the three students halted and Morgana's light even shimmered for a moment. When it was steady again, it revealed a little man hovering in mid air before them. He was clad in loud, outlandish clothes including an odd orange bow tie, and a bell-covered hat topped his head. He squinted at them with his mischievous eyes, and a radiant smile illuminated his face when he recognized them.

"Oooh, what do we have here?" he said without hiding his delight. "Students out of their beds in the middle of the night? I know someone who will be most pleased to learn that."
"Peeves, please..." James begged. Yet he knew his words were in vain when the poltergeist responded only with a malicious smirk.

Aylee shrugged at the excuse. She wasn't a very good liar, since she had never really lied in her life. Except for a few white lies she told her brothers. Oh well, she thought to herself. You asked for it. She wondered if they would be caught soon.

Her question was answered as soon as the three of them saw the shape in front of them. Oh, no... Aylee bit her lip. We're done for. She watched James try to change the poltergeist's mind. "Sweet?" she asked, holding out her Haribo packet to Peeves when James's plea wasn't enough. She had come across Peeves only a couple of times, but never after curfew. And that was only for Peeves to throw a water balloon or something at her. This was different. They were about to get caught.

Morgana could hear something, but wasn't sure what, before a blue ... thing appeared in front of her and the two others. It was flying, it walked through walls, but it sure as hell wasn't a ghost. It  had to be the renown poltergeist, Peeves. Morgana frowned. This wouldn't be good.

"Anyone who knows a poltergeist-repellent spell?" she whispered to them, not loud enough for Peeves to hear.

She then tried to remember everything she had heard of Peeves. Only thing was, she had never really been interested in a poltergeist... But she just needed what he feared. She thought harshly for a second while Aylee offered the blue bugger a candy. The Bloody Baron!  She then frowned. How on earth could they use that?

"The Bloody Baron," she whispered lowly, barely moving her lips, hoping the two students would understand what she meant.
