Aurelia wandered through the winding passages of the dungeon, before arriving at the carefully concealed door that led to the Slytherin common room. “Pure-blood,” announced the girl, a slight tremor in her voice, as the stone door concealed in the wall suddenly swung open, revealing the common room. Green-colored lamps hung from chains all over the ceiling, illuminating the otherwise dark and eerie underground room and its rough stone walls. Azure orbs quickly flickered around the room, as she noticed the crackling fire under an elaborate mantelpiece—perhaps the only source of warmth in the dank common room. The chairs by the fire seemed particular inviting, so the young girl quickly made her way towards a carved chair, and sat down. With a small, derisive sigh, the mahogany-haired girl opened up the Care of Magical Creatures textbook—Newt Scamander’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them—to the first page that Professor Vega had bookmarked. With a quill and parchment in hand, she immediately set out to write her name, date, and house on the top left corner of her notes, before reading over the material. The chapter, which was on Flobberworms and Centaurs, seemed rather dull. Within a few minutes, she found her thoughts drifting away from her academic studies, and she began to glance around the seemingly empty common room. This was her new home; this would be her home for the next seven years. The people in her house would be like family to her—the family that she never had.

Emilio slouched into the common room, aiming for his new dormitory. When he stepped through the wall into the greenish-lit room, he glanced around it with derision. Really? He had to live in this slime pit? He slid his earbuds out of his pockets (they weren't technically allowed, but he didn't care) and was about to stick them in his ears when he noticed a girl in the armchair on his left. She was reading a schoolbook, and Em snorted. He was hoping to do badly enough in school that he would get expelled, and never have to read another book in his life.

"Hey," he grunted. He didn't want to talk at all, but he figured that if he actually had to live with these people, he might as well get to know them well enough to avoid them.

Emilio inwardly cringed when the girl addressed him. He had been hoping that she wouldn't, that he could leave without having to talk. Unfortunately, she seemed like the type to hold a long, friendly conversation. Well, he could stop that. He glanced around the common room; stil no one there, rats. While the girl still gazed at him expectantly, he held off talking for a few moments. "What're you doing?" he finally asked. Wait, that wasn't what he had wanted to say. Obviously, she was reading and studying, and obviously, asking inane questions would only lead to inane conversation. Mad at himself, he glowered at the ground, determined to stay aloof.

Aurelia recoiled slightly, noticing his aloof personality and the grudging manner in which he carried himself. Azure orbs flickered slightly, as her gaze darted around the empty room, searching silently for something that she knew would never be there. "Just thinking," she replied softly, her gaze fixated on nothing in particular, though her eyes had begun to take on a much more defensive and distant look. A few moments passed as they sat in silence, before the girl gave her head a quick shake to clear her mind of her thoughts. "And yourself?" inquired the girl politely, if only because social etiquette dictated that she ought to behave in such a manner, though she managed to make it sound as though she wasn't too curious.

Emilio glanced at the floor. "Same," he muttered. "Just wandering around, thinking." He wondered how long they would be stuck in this pointless conversation, making small talk while it was clear neither of them wanted to. While he was contemplating his options: leave suddenly, pretend to die, etc., he looked at the girl's face more closely. She didn't seem to have any particular liking for him, as was clear from her guarded expression. Em felt uncomfortable around her, mainly because of her large, sea-colored eyes. They seemed to penetrate clearly into his secrets, and he had a feeling she was disappointed with what she found

His gaze flicked toward the dormitory entrance again. He could just bolt now, and the girl probably wouldn't care. Looking at her again, he waited to see if she would hem him in with another question, or just leave him be. He was hoping for the latter.
