Helen walked into the classroom. This was her first class in this term, and she was excited. Herbology had been one of the subjects she'd liked in Hogwarts when she was studying. She found the subject interesting and she hoped her students would feel the same. She took her seat behind the teachers' table and waited for the students to arrive.

As, you all know or don't know, I'm going to let you all RP your arrival.

Lesson will start after everyone has arrived.

Shah walked to where the Herbology class was taking place. She'd heard that Prof. Adela was going take Herbology and Charms this year, instead of Astronomy. Shah walked in and smiled at the teacher. "Hello Professor Adela."

She then went over to an empty bench at the back and sat down, as she waited for everybody to show up.

Spencer sauntered into the greenhouse for Herbology, sliding next to Shah, approving of the location- the very back. Just his thing. He nodded to her. "Hey." he muttered.

Shah smiled at the Spencer. "Hi." She said. This was probably the only class where 1st years and 2nd years weren't in different classes. Shah waited for the rest of the students to arrive, and she couldn't get started on the lesson.

Wade walked into the Herbology classroom with a headache. He rarely got sick, but the summer had ended to soon and he'd spent many nights talking to Lucy, sometimes it ended up with both of them getting only about 6 hours of sleep. He didn't like that; he loved sleeping, but he'd had to wake up as he didn't want to be late to class. Professor Adela was also his Herbology professor, and he was glad, because he liked her from Astronomy on the last term.
Eyeing the classroom, he noticed only Shah and Spencer Quinn had arrived.
Great.
He flashed a smile to Shah, and mouthed a "Hello". To Spencer, he only nodded his head. After a couple seconds of trying to figure out where he'd sit, he decided to sit at the front row and patiently waited for Lucy.

James paused for a minuted in front of the door leading into one of Hogwart's greenhouses. He was panting, as he had run all the way from the Castle in order not to be late. He had totally forgotten that he had taken Herbology this year, and a glance at his timetable had suddenly reminded him of his mistake.

Entering the classroom, he noticed with relief that the lesson hadn't started yet. Flashing a friendly smile at Shah, who was sitting in the last row, he joined Wade in the front. "Hi" he greeted him, still trying to catch his breath.

When he was joined at the front by James, he smiled at him. "Hey." he said in response to the boy's greeting. James seemed to have been running, as he was still panting a little. "What's the rush?" Wade asked, however, as soon as the words came out he knew that James most likely didn't want to be late to Herbology.

After almost all the students had arrived, Helen stood up. She decided to let the door open in case any more students were going to come.

"Hello everyone." Her voice rang through the class. "I'm Prof. Helen Adela, your Herbology and Charms teacher." She eyed each student. "Today we will be beginning with the....well, the beginning." She grinned and turned to the board.

Ministry of Magic Classifications

Turning back to the students, she pointed at the board. "Does anybody know what this is?"

Aurora stepped into the sweltering greenhouse, feeling the sun's rays magnified about a billion times. She dropped her stuf down and took a seat, sweating as she did so. The greenhouse was full of chatter, since both years of students were taking this class. Starting with the beginning... Aurora wasn't quite sure why that was necessary; Professor Evans had taught them a bit before leaving, but she figured that Professor Adela knew best.

After seeing the blackboard, Aurora thought about the question, then put her hand up. "Professor, we classify plants so that anyone can know which plants are dangerous, which are harmless, and which are used in spells and potions."

Helen nodded at Auror Finnigan. "That is right Miss Finnigan. Five points to Ravenclaw. This classification is given by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures to all known Beasts, Beings and Spirits. Now, there are five categories to the Ministry of Magic Classification. And they are...."

XXXXX: Known wizard killer / impossible to train or domesticate.
XXXX: Dangerous / requires specialist knowledge / skilled wizard may handle.
XXX: Competent wizards should cope.
XX: Harmless / may be domesticated.
X: Boring.

"I know that this is a classification that is used for magical creatures and not plants." Helen said. "But it can also be used for plants. Today's lesson is simple: write a paragraph or two about a few magical plants and under which category they can be grouped under." She walked to her desk. "I'm open to all and any question relating to today's lesson." She smiled.

Herbology: Lesson 1 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Herbology: Lesson 1    Herbology: Lesson 1 EmptyWed Feb 06, 2013 10:06 pm

With the help of his Herbology textbook and his knowledge of the subject, James attempted to find an example for each category Professor Adela had just mentioned. However, as the classification was not initially used for plants, there wasn't any indication about which class each one of them belonged to, so he just had to figure it out himself based on their description. After a few minutes of research, he took his quill, a piece of parchment and began writing.

James Riddle
Ravenclaw
Second Year

  • X: Boring
The Flitterbloom is an example of plant that can be placed under that category. It has long swaying tentacles, and is similar to the Devil's Snare in appearance. However, it is utterly harmless, and even boring, and can be kept as a pot plant.

  • XX: Harmless / may be domesticated
Dittany can be considered as a member of this category. It has various healing properties and can be used in many forms, being for example an ingredient for some potions. Other than its restorative ability, it can also be domesticated and used for decoration.

  • XXX: Competent wizards should cope
A Mandrake, also known as Mandragora, is a plant which has human like roots (like a baby when the plant is young, but maturing as the plant grows). The scream of a mature Mandrake when it is unearthed will kill any person who hears it, but a young Mandrake's screams will usually only knock a person out for several hours. However, a simple set of earmuffs is enough to protect from them. This plant is also the main ingredient for the Mandrake Restorative Draught, a potion used as an antidote to petrification.

  • XXXX: Dangerous / requires specialist knowledge / skilled wizard may handle
The Devil's Snare is composed of a mass of soft, springy tendrils and vines. This plant uses its creepers and tendrils to ensnare anyone who touches it, binding their arms and legs and eventually choking them. The harder a person struggles against Devil's Snare, the faster and more tightly it binds them. This dangerous plant prefers a dark, damp environment. It can be defeated with bright light and will recoil away from the heat of fire.

  • XXXXX: Known wizard killer / impossible to train or domesticate.
The Venomous Tentacula is a green, spiky, toothsome plant with mobile vines that try to grab living prey. It expels venom from its shoots, and its spikes are deadly. Its bite is highly poisonous. It is described as one of the most dangerous plants in the wizarding world. Only professional and trained herbologists can handle it.

Oustanding.

Aurelia glanced upwards from her silent reverie, tapping the tip of her quill absentmindedly against the rough surface of her desk. As she listened to the Professor's words and jotted down the requirements for the assignment, she immediately fished through the contents of her bag, before extracting a new and unused Herbology textbook. She flipped through the pages of the textbook, stopping every so often to jot down a word or two that pertained to the subject they were required to write about. Within a few minutes, she managed to produce a simple, yet meaningful, piece of writing which reflected her understanding of the subject.

Classification of Magical Plants

--Asphodel

Asphodel is usually found in common areas, and thus, are popular garden plants, which grow in well-drained soils with abundant natural light. However, as natural a nd common as they are, they also possess immense magical power. They come in a variety of different colors, red, green, black and blue, and are all members of the Asphodelus genus. However, most wizards and witches employ the asphodelus albus when brewing potions for medicinal purposes. Most people will burn the flower done and use its ashes within the potion. Powdered root of asphodel is another common use of the asphodel plant within potions.

This plant is classified as a X plant, meaning that it is rather uninteresting.

--Gillyweed

The gillyweed is native to the Mediterranean area; it appears to be a bundle of slimy, greyish-green rat tails. When eaten, it gives a person gills to breathe underwater and gives them webbed hands and feet for swimming. The duration of the gillyweed effect is approximately one hour.

This plant is classified as a XX plant, meaning that is harmless and may be domesticated, as long as there is water present.

--Wolfsbane

Aconite, also known as Wolfsbane or Monkshood, is a very dangerous plant, as a mere lick of the plant can be fatal. It was given the name wolfsbane in light of the potion that shares its name. They are handsome plants; the tall, erect stem being crowned by racemes of large and eye-catching blue, purple, white, yellow or pink zygomorphic flowers with numerous stamens. These herbaceous perennial plants are chiefly natives of the mountainous parts of the northern hemisphere, growing in moisture retentive but well-draining soils on mountain meadows.

This plant is classified as a XXX-XXXXX plant.

Exceeds Expectations.
