Fate, Destiny, whatever [Maya]

After the other day's 'deep spiritual journey' where Kynan decided that he needed a broomstick, and wanted an owl, he was going to act on the idea of getting a job. It was probably a bad idea, given that he was basically the laziest person in the world, but since he would be working in three years' time, maybe he could find out what it's like. Of course, he had tried to talk himself out of it several times, thinking things like the fact that his family would probably laugh at him, or that he might quit on the first day.

But just a simple job at Hogsmeade couldn't hurt, could it? In the end, as he was going down to the school gates on the way there, he ended up turning round and letting his feet lead him wherever. He walked down a path which he didn't know where it lead, but when he looked up and payed attention, he realized that he was heading for the lake. Kynan continued down the path without hesitating. He hadn't been down to the lake in... forever. He thought that it was a pretty stupid lake, as he had never once encountered the Giant Squid.

Maybe he could catch it this time. After finding a shady tree, Kynan sat under it and tried to relax. There wasn't anyone around, most students were probably in Hogsmeade or studying inside. He didn't question it, it was kind of nice. Kind of. It was also kind of lonely... kind of.

Maya was wandering the grounds, something she had been doing more lately as it was a nice escape from the castle and having to listen to everyone talk about O.W.L.S. As practical as Maya was and as much as she was worried about taking them there was always the N.E.W.T.S she told herself and they were way more important.

She wished her parents would stop stressing over them. She got an owl at least once a week reminding her of her father's expectations. 'Just because she was in a wizard school did not mean she could slack off' were his favourite words recently. Maya hadn't even bothered opening the last correspondence and just flung it in the fire. It was her life she was allowed to live it whatever way she chose, she reminded herself defiantly.

Maya was so lost in thought, brroding over her relationship with her parents, she hadn't realised where she was walking. She had come to her familiar spot, the lake. She found the gentle lapping of the water against the bank smooth and relaxing and she always found her problems became minimal when she thought of a whole other world just below the water's surface.

Maya was so glad that her unconscious had brought her there, most of all when she spotted a familiar figure sitting under a nearby tree. Normally Maya would have tried to sneak up on Kynan and frighten him, but she wasn't in the mood today. Instead she made her way over, not worried in the slightest about making her presence heard.  

"Hullo, what's got you looking so thoughtful?" Maya asked, almost laughing at Kynan's face. It was all scrunched up and he looked so confused, poor guy. She knew how he felt. But at least she had run into him, problems were a lot better when dealt with other people and with that thought she sat down next to her best friend. Maybe they'd get lucky and the giant squid would pay them a visit.

Kynan's thoughts were totally interrupted when he heard a familiar voice. He looked up, without thought, his face broke out into a smile. And then suddenly he was laughing at what Maya said. Or what he remembered about Aylee always saying that the two of them bumping into each other was practically fate. 'Maybe fate will give me a second chance,' normal people would think the corniest lines ever to exist. But Kynan wasn't normal people, so in his mind he just thought, 'This thing better work again.'

"You've got the look, too," Kynan replied, still grinning but serious at the same time. Maya did have that thoughtful look on her face. Honestly, he thought that Maya had been having that look on her face since they had met up again at that one end of term party. He couldn't remember which, though, but after Maya had been gone for ages she's seemed more... grown up? Distant? She was still the same Maya, though, which was great. Not great, amazing. No, brilliant!

He quickly moved over to give Maya some space in the shade and patted the ground, gesturing for her to sit down. By doing that, half of him was basically being burnt by the sun, but he didn't care as much. "How are you?" Kynan then asked. Since it had been ages since they last spoke, and they barely seemed to have as much classes together anymore. Mostly because he sometimes skipped them, but that wasn't the point.

His hands started playing with the grass. It was a new habit he had developed over the past few years, and Aylee always told him that it was nervousness. Oh great, Kynan thought, looking down at his hands, then back up to Maya. He was thinking about how much he had wanted to ask her out put kept putting it off everytime. What if he tried now? Would she say yes? Or, no? That was basically his main fear, that she wouldn't like him back and then their friendship would end. Just say something, idiot, he thought. He took a deep breath, and,"Did you get the invitation for that party?"
