| It was a nice day. By nice, she didn’t mean it was warm, no. It was December and the ground was icy. Snow hadn’t fallen yet, but she didn’t doubt it would soon. Maybe it was pretty, but by nice she meant it was a working day, her last working day before Christmas! Aoife liked Hogsmeade weekends and working days. Today was both! So really, things were quite excellent. At some point, her friends would probably be popping in for ice-cream. If they could really desire the ice when it was as cold as this. There were warm flavours, though, and people were weird, so they’d probably want it anyway.
She had to make her way down to the shop before the jobless students, so she could help set up the shop or whatever. Cleaning the counter and scooping might not sound incredibly exciting, but she loved her job! When she arrived, Morgana wasn’t there. Maybe she didn’t have this shift or maybe she was just a bit late. The Gryffindor was actually a bit relieved. She hadn’t seen ScarySixthYearEvilPrettyNonUnicornGirl since Charms. That was a good thing. The boss, however, was there. It was a bit weird, he didn’t usually do much work himself. “Morning!” she called towards the backroom, and received a brief greeting in return. Then she washed her hands and went to wipe down the counter.
For a while, nobody came into the shop. It was still early, the students might not have arrived yet. So what did that mean? It meant it was Aoife’s “think and dance time!” That, surprisingly, involved thinking and dancing. There was no music in the shop. It would be good to have some. She’d suggest it to the boss at some point. Then her dancing would look cooler. Some people thought she was weird for dancing to music inside her head instead of real music, even though it was totally normal.
Now, what could she think about while she did the funky chicken across the dance floor - or normal floor, whatever you wanted to call it - and sang the Mustachio song? Chickens. Home. She was going home next week. For the Christmas holidays. Aoife didn’t really want to, but her mother had insisted that they have a real family Christmas with all her siblings and their families. At least she’d get to see the sheep and look after them in the cold winter months. Poor, precious little babies. They must be missing her so much, almost as much as she missed them.
The first customer of the day was an older Ravenclaw boy who gave her an odd look for leaping across the room madly. The boss didn’t mind, as long as she didn’t scare the customers away. “Good morning!” she beamed. “What can I get you?” He ordered a butterbeer ice-cream. It was a clever choice, what with how cold it was. But he was a Ravenclaw, they had to be clever. After she scooped it up and handed him the cone all professionally, he fled the shop, probably eager to get away from her dancing.
So she got back to her awesome dancing, this time twirling around dramatically as she sang loudly. “Mustachiooooo!” It helped her think. Who would be her next customer? It was an interesting mystery! | |
