Family comes first (Anthony) Empty
PostSubject: Family comes first (Anthony)   Family comes first (Anthony) EmptyMon Feb 17, 2014 4:20 pm

It took three straight days of bugging Anthony to finally convince him to meet up. His usual excuse of being too busy were far too common by now, and Victoria wasn't about to give up. She had barely talked to her brother since the semester started, except a few pleasantries exchanged in the hallways between classes.

She was worried about him, more than she led on to. Clearly it was much harder for Anthony to leave Brazil than it was for Victoria. He had a lot more to lose than her - school, all of his friends, a life. But it has been a year since they left and Victoria had hoped that her brother would have adjusted by now. By what she could see, he didn't or is refusing to.

She had never felt more distant from her family than right now. Her father had failed to visit over the summer, just as he did for Christmas and Easter, her mother was a complete mess and her brother was ignoring her. There was not a lot she could do about her parents, but with her brother it was different. She promised herself that she would not give up on him or let him slip away. For her, family was too important for her not to do anything about it. She had to try. Finding an empty bench, she sat down as she waited and dangled her feet in the air. Being as short as she was, her feet didn't reach the ground so she gently swung them left and right in a harmonius motion.

Family comes first (Anthony) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Family comes first (Anthony)   Family comes first (Anthony) EmptyMon Feb 17, 2014 4:57 pm

Hogwarts was a lot different from the Brazilian wizarding school. It was huge and had all kinds of secret doors and passageways and tricks. And Anthony might have found it amazing if he didn't hate the place so much. Anthony hated Hogwarts. As though it wasn't bad enough that his parents had gotten divorced, last year his mother had forced him to uproot from his old school and friends and shoved him unwillingly into Hogwarts. And it was the last place that Anthony wanted to be.

To make things even worse, his friends from Brazil were slowly starting to forget about him. At first, he'd owled them all the time. The best part of the entire year was when he got to visit them for a week over the summer. But he could tell that his absence was causing them to forget his existence. They hardly communicated any more, and it was only making him more bitter about his new school.

In all honestly, Anthony wasn't exactly giving the place a chance. He knew that. But he didn't care. It wasn't his fault that he was there. He hadn't spoken to anyone or made any friends, and that was okay with him. Unfortunately, there was still his sister to deal with. She was the reason that he was anywhere besides sulking in his dormitory during his free period. She'd pestered him for days about meeting up outside of class. He'd given in with the hope that she'd quit bugging him afterwards.

Finding his way to the middle courtyard, which was bright and sunny and the exact opposite of his present mood, he quickly caught sight of his sister. She was sitting on a bench, waiting for him. She looked so little, with her feet dangling over the ground. For a moment, it crossed his mind that she was going through the same thing that he was. The divorce had been hard on her, too. Pushing the thought aside, he approached her.

"Hey," he said as he reached her and threw a leg over the bench she was sitting on, straddling it. It was a bit awkward, actually. He'd been pushing her away for so long that it felt strange to greet her. He wasn't even sure why he'd blocked Victoria out. Maybe he was jealous of how much better she was handling everything than he was. He didn't have a clue what to say to her, but he found that he was able to offer her a brief smile without forcing it. That was something, at least.

Family comes first (Anthony) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Family comes first (Anthony)   Family comes first (Anthony) EmptyTue Feb 18, 2014 12:18 am

A familiar 'hey' caught her attention as she pushed her day dreaming aside. Her gaze fell on the dark haired boy with large almond eyes. His features reminded her so much of her brother, but she had a feeling that it wasn't really him anymore. Not the Anthony she knew at least. The little boy that used to decapitate her dolls and pull hilarious pranks on their parents seemed to be gone, or maybe just hiding from her. Maybe if she tried hard enough to get that little boy back, maybe he would reappear again.

"Hi", she replied softly matching his short smile. She couldn't help but be angry at him. After all this time, all she gets is a half ass smile and one word? One word?! If she was trying this hard, he had to put some effort in as well. "How are your classes?", she asked awkwardly, as she was talking to an acquaintance and not her older brother.

"I didn't call you here to talk about your classes", she finally admitted, figuring that Anthony would realize that for himself quickly. She promised herself that she won't become one of those boring lecture giving type of sisters, but she had to voice her concern."You know I wouldn't have to nag you about these things if you would just talk to me. Say anything, I don't care. Just once a week say hi to me so I know you still exist, that you haven't vanished. Lets face it both of us know that you don't want to be here and right now I think you could be capable of doing something reckless - like leaving. So please, say more than a world to me. Don't make me be that nagging sister that you will end up hating" she said in almost one breath.

Breathing deeply to calm down a bit, she felt a little bad jumping on her brother like that right away, but it was something that had to be said. She was relieved to have finally spoken her mind directly, but wasn't particularly excited to see Anthony's reaction. He had a hot temper just like her sometimes, it runs in the family. But she hoped that he would just listen to her and hear her out for a change.

"I hate that you're so much taller than me", she said rolling her eyes at him, switching the subject to lay off the tension a little bit. His feet were firmly on the ground with his knees bent, while her toes didn't even reach near it. Victoria hoped it was only because he was older, but it seems that she was just stuck with the short genes in the family.

Family comes first (Anthony) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Family comes first (Anthony)   Family comes first (Anthony) EmptyThu Feb 20, 2014 8:02 pm

Apparently, Anthony's miniature smile wasn't good enough for his sister, because she barely smiled back at him. Well, that was what he had just done to her. But he knew that when Victoria did so, it was because she was frustrated with him. She replied by asking him how his classes were. "Fine," was all he said, shrugging his shoulders. What was the point of elaborating? He knew that his classes weren't what she wanted to talk to him about. Why drag it out?

He folded his hands in his lap and waited expectantly for his sister to continue. Anthony knew that she wouldn't sit in silence for long. He was right. The first thing she said was that she didn't really want to talk about his classes. "I figured as much," he replied, still waiting for her to get on with it.

Then, as expected, the words started pouring out all at once. He sighed as she began to voice her hurt over his ignoring her. In all honesty, he hadn't meant to make his sister upset. It was never about her. That didn't mean that he was doing right by her, either. But his intention was never to hurt her or make her worry. Part of him wanted to just get up and walk away, or start shouting at her about how she didn't understand what he was going through. But neither of those would accomplish anything.

"Okay, look," he began, talking slowly so that his temper wouldn't get the best of him. "You like Hogwarts. I can see that. You've made friends and you've done well in your classes. And that's wonderful for you." Anthony paused to collect his thoughts. "But I don't like it. Not one bit. Victoria, I hate this place, and I hate them for what they've put us through." He was referring to their parents, of course.

"I'm not going to leave," he sighed, closing his eyes. Not that he didn't want to sometimes. But he wouldn't abandon his sister. Though he kept her at a distance, she was still his sister. "And I'm not going to hate you," he added, glancing up at her. He didn't agree to talk to her more. Maybe she wouldn't notice.

The next thing she said was so off topic that it actually made him laugh a bit. "It isn't my fault that you're such a midget," he said to her, grinning a bit wider than he had before. "I got the good genes, apparently," he added jokingly.

Family comes first (Anthony) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Family comes first (Anthony)   Family comes first (Anthony) EmptySat Feb 22, 2014 6:57 pm

Victoria listened to her brother's words and was glad that he had kept his composure, at least as much as he could. But what he was saying was nothing new to her. It seemed that anger and resentment clouded Anthony's thoughts ever since the divorce and he couldn't figure out how to let go. The separation of their parents had affect her too of course, but not as much as it did Anthony. All she wanted to do was help him, which was a very difficult task when on most days he refused to even talk to her.

"I don't like the fact that we had to move a continent away from our friends and family either. I miss home as much as you do Anthony. I just try and make the best out of it, that is all. I would hardly describe that as a wonderful. But I try, I really do. And that is all I ask of you. Because we are going to be here for quite a few more years. I don't want to spend all of them in hatred", said Victoria hoping that her words could influence her brother, even though she knew how stubborn he could get.

Hearing him say that he hated their parents, Victoria sighed. She was jealous of that, actually. She wished she could blame and hate them too, but she didn't. "If I could, I would hate them as well. You have every right to, after what they did. And we had no say in it whatsoever. But I can't hate our mother, because I love her. And although he is heavily flawed, I can't hate our father either. Because I still want to have a family - even if it's one that's falling apart", she admitted. Being far less independent and rebellious than Anthony, Victoria still needed and strove for her parents approval in everything she did.

"But you're not gonna be here for me, either", Victoria said more as a question than a statement. "If you don't like it here - then get yourself kicked out. Or at least try to fit in, those are your options. Pretending like people in this school don't exist won't get you anywhere", she said a bit worried that he might be leaning towards the first option rather than the second. It certainly would take a lot less effort.

Victoria rolled her eyes when Anthony called her a midget, how typical of him. But she laughed nonetheless. "You did get the good genes. I'm just the pale, short one out of the two. How is that fair?", she asked with a chuckle. It was good to see her brother laugh for once. "I'll give you at least one thing to look forward to at Hogwarts - my Quidditch try outs. So you know when I fall and hit my face you can be there in the audience laughing your ass off. Now that's worth sticking around for."

Family comes first (Anthony) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Family comes first (Anthony)   Family comes first (Anthony) EmptyWed Mar 19, 2014 9:30 pm

"No," he said sharply, glancing at his sister. "You don't miss it as much as I do. You can't - you're only twelve. You hadn't even started school when we moved. You had no real friends to leave." She had some friends, sure. But none like the friends he'd made through his years in school in Brazil. Victoria was younger, and change didn't bother her as easily. Anthony was leaving a lot more behind than his sister - at least in his mind.

"Make the best of it?" he asked, sighing in frustration. "Victoria, how can I make the best of something that is awful no matter how I look at it?" She might not think it was hard to look on the bright side, because she was good at it. But for Anthony, it was anything but easy. And he was hardly in the mood to put any effort into this damned place.

Anthony glanced up at his sister, his look a bit softer, when she talked about wishing that she could hate their parents as well. "No, it's good that you don't hate them," he said after a moment of silence. "I guess deep down I don't either - at least, not mum. But I don't want anything to do with her right now. So it's good that she has you..." Anthony trailed off, his sentimental side wearing thin already after his short admission that he didn't house any true hatred for his mother. "But he doesn't deserve anything from you," he added, his tone turning cold as he spoke about his father, who had instigated the entire situation. "No family is better than one with that git in it."

Anthony sighed again as Victoria pointed out that he wouldn't be there for her, even though he wasn't running away. "Of course I will," he told her, running a hand through his hair in exasperation. "If you need me..." he added. Damn, this wasn't easy. He didn't want to hurt Victoria. He just didn't want to be around people. At all. But she was his sister, and he supposed she was right. He couldn't just block her out, even if he did so to everyone else. "And pretending they don't exist is the perfect solution. It's enough to get me through this place with good marks so that I can go back home." And by home, he meant Brazil when he came of age. Not England over the summers.

He grinned again at her comment. It felt good to smile, actually, which was strange. "I just got all of the ruggedly handsome Brazilian genes, that's all," he said. "You got mum's boring english ones." He raised an eyebrow at her when she said he could look forward to her making a fool of herself at quidditch tryouts. "You're trying out?" he questioned. He'd considered trying out for the Gryffindor team just to give himself something to do, but he didn't want to play quidditch with a bunch of losers. "That is worth sticking around for, I suppose," he chuckled. "But you won't make a fool of yourself. You're great - you'll make the team for sure!" Victoria was about as good as he was - and that was pretty good, especially for someone her age. "If you're worried about it, though, we could spend some time practicing before tryouts!" Anthony realized that his enthusiasm had gotten away from him a bit at the idea of flying. Taking a breath to calm himself and keep his cool, he added, "You know, if you want the help that is."

Family comes first (Anthony) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Family comes first (Anthony)   Family comes first (Anthony) EmptyWed Mar 19, 2014 11:40 pm

"I am only twelve? Only twelve?! What is that supposed to mean?", she asked him furiously, as he was insinuating that just because she was younger than him, that somehow she had less to lose or to leave behind. "You are not the only one who had a life there. Or friends. And yes, I do think that eventually you could see the bright side of this situation, if you only tried!", she insisted, already sounding like a broken record even to herself. What was the point of repeating herself over and over if Anthony wasn't even listening to her?

She was relieved when he mentioned that he couldn't hate their mother. Not even after the divorce. It seemed that Victoria was the only solace her mother had in these lonely times. She would write to her at least twice every week, mainly about how much she missed them both. "Do you get her letters too? Or is it just me?", she asked curiously. But no matter what, Victoria replied to each and every one within the day. She felt sorry for her mother, now broken-hearted and alone. This wasn't the life she wanted for her family, Victoria was sure of it. No one would want...this

"Don't. Don't talk like that about dad", she growled. Everyone knew that she was a daddy's girl, through and through. He was the one who taught Victoria how to fly, how to tie her shoes and levitate their pet cat. In her eyes, her father was the best in the world and could do no wrong. She simply could not accept the idea that he was flawed. So anytime their dad would make a mistake, Victoria would make up any excuse in his defense. "He didn't want this either, it's not his fault!", she insisted. Victoria wrote at least a dozen letters to her dad last summer, begging him to come visit them in London. He promised he would and then failed to show up. "I won't listen to you speak lies about him!"

"No, it's fine. I don't need you", she said just to spite him. But the truth was just the opposite. Of course she needed him, Anthony was her big brother. She was use to always having him around. "By the time you get to go home, there will be no one to get back to, Anthony. You should think of that."

Victoria gladly agreed to change the topic of conversation, especially when it made Anthony smile. "Yes, I'm planning to. I think I'm a bit too small to be a beater, so I'm going for a chaser. There's at least two empty places this year, so I'm hoping if I practice that I could get good enough to get in", she explained. A grin came upon her place when she could clearly see Anthony's excitement. Her brother had always loved Quidditch and perhaps this was the perfect way to get him out of his room, even if just for an hour. "Oh, I would be really grateful if you could help! Practicing together would help me out a lot. And I think you should try out too. The Gryffindors might actually have a chance to win this year if you were playing for them", she said with a smile.

"Can I ask you something? Did you... have someone back in Brazil, at school? Like.. a girl?", she asked a bit awkwardly.

Family comes first (Anthony) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Family comes first (Anthony)   Family comes first (Anthony) EmptyMon Mar 24, 2014 2:16 pm

"It's supposed to mean that you don't understand," he shot back at her bitterly. "You're just a kid, whether you want to believe it or not, and you just don't understand." She went on to lecture him again, and he found himself beginning to tune her out. "That's enough, Victoria," he said irritably, dropping his head into his hands and trying to ignore her words. If you only tried. "I don't want to try," he said with a tone of finality. "Because we shouldn't have to." It wasn't his fault that they were stuck here. It wasn't Victoria's, either. But it was they who were suffering for it. And that was hardly fair.

Anthony looked up weakly when his sister asked if their mother wrote him. What was he supposed to say to that? Yes, but I can't stand her so much that I just don't answer? No, that was definitely not the right thing to say to his sister - she'd go ballistic. So instead, without a trace of hesitation, he said, "Not since the first week of school." Anthony was a good liar, but his sister was also very perceptive. She might not believe him, but if she questioned him he could probably convince her. Unless she asks mum. Hopefully his mother would have the good sense to keep Victoria out of it - his sister hardly needed to deal with Anthony's problems along with her own. Not that she didn't seem determined to do just that.

Victoria's eagerness to defend their father hit a nerve immediately, and his eyes turned cold when she accused him of speaking lies about the despicable, worthless man that had caused all of this in the first place. "Open your eyes, Victoria," he said angrily. "That piece of shit doesn't care about anything but himself - including you." Anthony usually tried to keep his language a bit milder around his sister, but in his anger he found his restraint slipping. He knew his words were harsh, but they were true. And the sooner his sister came to believe them, the better off she would be. "All he's ever done is disappoint us. He says he'll come home, but he never does. He says he'll try harder, but he never does. He makes us think that we're worth something to him and then turns around and destroys our family!" Anthony could hear his voice rising slightly. Just the thought of his father infuriated him - he had already decided that if he ever saw that git again, he'd waste no time in bashing his face in. Then, a bit softer, in case he'd really upset her, "Believing in him is only going to hurt you in the end."

Anthony looked away irritably as Victoria went on about how she didn't need him anyway. She was probably right - she was strong and smart. She'd be fine on her own. But she wouldn't be happy. Her words about having nobody to go back to hit him, and part of him knew she was right. But he didn't admit it. He chose to just not say anything. Hopefully she'd drop it.

"Oh good!" he said brightly when his sister said she was going out for chaser instead of her usual beater position. "That means I can help you without having to get hit in the head a dozen times!" Anthony played keeper at his old school - it was his best position, though he was alright at the others. Except seeker. "You'll make it," he told her. "I might not be a professional, but I'm a pretty good keeper if I do say so myself," he joked. "If you can score on me, you can score on anyone here." She suggested that he try out, too, and his smile faltered a bit. "I don't know. It would feel wrong to play with a new team. My old team was like family... I can't get that here." Maybe he could, but he wasn't willing to find out.

He raised an eyebrow at his sister's next question - he certainly wasn't expecting that one. A small grin formed on his mouth at the awkwardness with which she asked. "Not really," he responded, shaking his head. "Well, not officially. There was this one girl that I got on with a bit better than most, but I didn't exactly have a chance to pursue it, did I?" Because he'd been ripped away from home. But trying to keep the conversation light like it had been when they were talking about quidditch, he went on. "You didn't have someone back in Brazil, did you?" he joked, knowing that she was much too young to have had a boy in mind back home. Then, as the thought crossed his mind, he added a bit more seriously - "Or here?" His sister was too young to date anyone, and he'd be the first one to give some loser second year who thought differently a piece of his mind.

Family comes first (Anthony) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Family comes first (Anthony)   Family comes first (Anthony) EmptyMon Mar 24, 2014 6:42 pm

"Alright Anthony, that is enough", she said with a sigh, not knowing what else to say. She was slowly giving up on this whole conversation, as it was clearly going nowhere. How could she make her brother see a different side of things? What good was it to only see the negative? She was only worried that Anthony's refusal to forgive their parents would cause him nothing but pain and unhappiness. However that was a choice her brother had to make by himself. "Fine, if that is what you wish, I will not pester you about the subject anymore."

"First week?", Victoria asked as the words echoed in her ears. Was it truly possibly that her mother would write to her consistently at least four times a week but when it comes to Anthony she couldn't even be bothered writing once a month? Perhaps she was giving him space and some time to think things through. Or perhaps Anthony was lying. Neither situation seemed right, so she decided not to dwell on it any further.

Nobody knew her brother as well as she did - they were siblings after all. Growing up with Anthony, she had learned to detect and tolerate his every mood and thought. She was patient and understanding, in most situations at least, and tried very hard not to let her temper get the best of her. But that all went through the window when Anthony brought up their father, whom Victoria would defend to her grave. Victoria closed her eyes and clenched her firsts, trying not her hear her brother's malicious words. She knew he was right, their father had abandoned and disappointed them more than a few times. He was nowhere near the perfect parent - but all of this had no impact on Victoria's affections towards him.

Furious because of what he had just said, she flew towards her brother and tackled him to the ground. "Do not say another word, do you hear me! He might not be perfect but he is all we have! And he loves us, I know he does! Some people do not even get that", she said as the words rolled down her lips with anger. It took her awhile to compose herself and get back to her seat at the bench. "I.... I'm sorry", she spoke in a hushed tone as her cheeks changed to a rosy red color. She had no idea what had possessed her in that moment and was now feeling ashamed to have snapped like that on her own brother.

Finally, a change of subject. Qudditch was something she could talk about. "Thanks I do hope you are right", she said certain that with her brother's help her skills would greatly improve. He was not only a good keeper but also a good teacher. "Well you should apply just for the heck of it then. Wouldn't want you to become rusty, dear brother. Then I shall become a better Qudditch player than you", she teased him with a grin.

Victoria had thought that the reason of her brother's misery could possibly be a girl he had left behind - but clearly that was not it. "Oh yes, haven't you heard Anthony? I had left a sea of guys back in Brasil who now cry for me everyday. That's the reason I get so many letters", she joked with a playful smile, although slowly starting to regret ever bringing up this topic. 'Or here?', he had asked her. Her lips had started to form a 'no' but her mind had thought of a name that she just couldn't ignore. No, it was only a silly crush. Besides, the boy would never think of Victoria in that way - they were just friends. They practiced flying together, he saw her dance and that's it. Realizing that she was taking too much time to answer this question than she should, she promptly shook her head and said "Not really"
