Mordred stood in front of the mirror in his bathroom, looking at his back. The white scars that trailed there like snakes downwards. He tilted his head a bit to the side. Ah, the past was non-erasable. He straightened up and took a black tee and pulled it over his head. He looked to the door and his lips twitched a bit. Morgana was home. This was something Mordred was really glad of. He walked to the door and opened it, stepping through his bedroom and down the steps.

She was sitting in the couch, reading a book. Knowing Morgana it would be a school book or some book on the worst creatures and how to destroy them. He walked over to the couch and sat down. Her feet were quickly lying in his lap and he shook his head slightly, but he was smiling again. He picked up his own book on research done by a madman in the medieval times. He held it in his right hand while his left arm was lying over Morgana's feet.

Mordred then looked at the book to see what it was about, and he almost dropped his own. Gaunt's journal. Marvolo Gaunt's journal. Mordred closed his own book and snatched the book out of Morgana's hands. "What's this?" he asked calmly, though his mind was reeling.

Morgana had been searching the house for something she had never had any interest in finding. Mordred had just gone up to take a shower, and he was good at using some time at that. So she had a lot of time on her hands. She didn't mind it if he found out what she was reading, but she would like to find it first. Otherwise he might not help her and discourage her.

Looking high and low in their bookshelves, Morgana rolled her eyes. Why weren't minor students allowed to use some magic? Like accio. That was harmless. And Morgana wasn't stupid enough to use magic in places where muggles were hanging out. Honestly! She found it so annoying that she was punished for stupid and careless minors.

But then she found it. A brown book, folded around torn and ragged pages. Marvolo's journal. She smirked to herself and fetched it out of the bookshelf. She then turned around, untying it and opening the first page. She reached the couch and sat down, already engrossed. Nothing broke her concentration until the couch sunk a bit, and Morgana knew Mordred had sat down.

She quickly put her feet up in his lap, like she always used to do when she was younger, and he placed his arm over her legs. They usually sat in silence hours on end, reading their own books, but this time, the silence didn't last.

Morgana looked up at Mordred as he took the book out of her hands. "What?" she asked as she saw the look in his eyes. Was her interest in Marvolo really that horrible? "It's Marvolo's journal," she then stated, even though she knew that he already knew that, "I thought I ought to read it." She wasn't trying to apologize or justify why she was reading it, she was perfectly honest. Why shouldn't she read about her ancestry, no matter how bloody it had been?

Mordred looked at his daughter as she merely stated that she ought to read it. Was that the truth? Innocent reading? And even so, only interest would make a person read a book. Then again, Morgana was the sort of person to simply read a book for academic reasons.

But the thought of her reading Marvolo's journal was unsettling. He remembered well his own reason for reading it, and even though he had been forced back to the right path, he couldn't be sure that Morgana would be if her reason was the same as his own.

"All right," he said calmly, knowing she'd recognize his concern. Because Mordred was concerned. He might not care about most of the things in this world, but his daughter was something completely different to him. "But what brought this on now?" he then asked, trying to get her to explain.

He then straightened up as he remembered some news he had yet to give her. He looked at her, catching her attention and gave her the look that basically meant a smile. "I applied for the job of Head of the Department of Mysteries. I got it," he said, his voice somewhat nonchalant, but he was sure that Morgana would see how this would benefit him immensely.

He hadn't let go of the journal subject yet, but he'd let her mull it over. This was yet another thing he was certain that she knew he'd come back to. She knew him almost as well as he knew her.

Morgana understood why Mordred was making a big deal out of the journal thing, but she wasn't about to confirm this. He had every reason to be concerned, because she wasn't reading this for her own amusement. But after so many years of her life, knowing Mordred, she knew how to tell things and make him believe it. It wasn't the hardest thing she had done, no. But she didn't like it. She hated hiding things from him, but this was a thing that had become a part of her, and she knew he wouldn't like it. And she didn't like the thought of him being disapproving of her.

She looked into a wall thoughtfully at his question and after a few seconds, she turned back to him. "I think it has something to do with our previous DaDA professor. Elldir was his name. I think. Or Elddir. Something along those lines. He was prejudiced. And the new professor seems pretty knowledgeable about Dark Arts, and I was thinking that being a professor wouldn't be a horrible job," she said calmly, finishing with a shrug.

Truth was, she had no interest in staying at Hogwarts. She didn't even like the place. But she did see herself in a profession that had something to do with crafty magic. Not an auror, that was boring. Fighting evil wasn't really her thing either. She basically didn't have the foggiest idea of what she wanted to do with her life. Not that it stressed her, she'd do perfectly in all her OWLs either way, and her NEWTs would be no less than outstanding. She was going to get only great marks and be able to chose whatever she wanted to do.

She then perked up as Mordred told her about his new position. A ghost of a smile stretched her lips. "That is amazing!" she said, almost enthusiastic. She could tell that this was very beneficial and she was really happy for her father. She could imagine him bossing everyone in the department around. He would be a great boss though. Maybe not a very complimentary one, but he wasn't cruel, he'd let his workers be home with their sick kids, he wouldn't fire a man for having a cold. No, he'd be great for this. And there wasn't a person alive who didn't have the least bit respect for Mordred Gaunt. Be it a fearful one or not.

"Is it a good position so far?" she asked, wanting to keep the conversation at that track for a while longer; she knew he'd go back to the journal at one point.

Mordred listened to Morgana's reason and frowned. He had believed people had moved on from Voldemort's reign, but they were obviously still just as dimwitted as normal. Not that this actually surprised him. Humans were primitive beings with mostly only their own interests in mind. Slytherin or not, they were all the same. Manipulative, dumb, primitive and they never learned.

Which was why he was worried about the journal. Morgana reading it wasn't a crime, but her intentions were different from what she told him. He would've believed it if she hadn't pretended not to remember the professors name. Morgana remembered everything that interested her. And she wouldn't forget a professors name. She was playing the innocent card too obviously. And Mordred didn't like it.

"He sounds like a stupid man," he said, his hand reaching out to give the journal back to Morgana and turned his attention to his own book. But he did think that Morgana would make a good professor. Probably scaring the students to their deaths, but she'd definitely be able to teach them what they needed to know. "What subject would you be willing to teach?" he asked her, even though he was sure it would be Defense against the Dark Arts. But he didn't think she wanted to be a professor at all. He was pretty certain that she wouldn't be interested in such a job.

Her reaction to his job made him smile. Mordred Gaunt style, of course. No teeth, just somewhat stretched up at the corners. He always had to smile when he could hear a different tone in her voice. Something other than monotone or cold. It always warmed him. And made him think that he hadn't been that unsuccessful at raising her. But he'd sooner die than see her turn to the Dark Ones. Not because they were so awful, but because they could turn around and kill her any moment, no matter how brilliant she was.

Mordred nodded, knowing she was both interested and stalling for time before he turned the subject back to the journal. "It is. The people working there do as they're told, they're good at their job. And I get time to continue my research," he said. He didn't tell her what that meant, as it was top secret, even to his daughter. Telling her might also endanger her life. So there was no way he'd be telling her anything. He looked into his book again and fell silent, feeling her starting up the reading of the journal again.

Why? He wanted to ask her, and receive an honest answer. But for now, he let her read.

Morgana nodded and accepted the journal. Professor Elldirs was probably smarter than most people, but he was just the same as the next human being; easily fell to temptation of things that no longer mattered. The government didn't care about blood anymore, and everyone knew the governments of this world were slow, so when people were even slower than the government… Honestly.

But he had taught her a lot. She found Dark Arts interesting, not because of who she could use it on, but simply the power. And she knew that was a very normal temptation and easy to succumb to, but she didn't want to use the power on people, that didn't matter. What mattered was simply the fact that she had the power to do so. She could if she wanted to. She didn't want to, but she could. That was all.

She knew that Mordred would see this as a dangerous way of thought, because from what she had gathered of information from his time at Hogwarts, he had been thinking much the same. He probably still was. Then again, Mordred did have that power. Mordred knew so much about the Dark Arts it was unfathomable. And that coming from Morgana, who constantly studied and knew as many spells as most graduates from Hogwarts did, said a lot.

For a moment, she considered what position at Hogwarts she'd most like to have. Of course DaDA was what intrigued her the most, but she really did like potions as well. Not that she'd ever become a professor. She would never be able to be one. She'd be too annoyed with the students, and she would never enjoy a single day, since she'd be surrounded by the same students all the time. No, professorship was not the thing for her. "Probably DaDA, as it is what I'm most interested in," she said. She didn't mention that it was only the DA part of the subject she was truly interested in, but it hung in the air, and Mordred would grab hold of it.

She studied his face as she saw his trademark smile. She loved that smile. It was so … Mordred. He was the most amazing person in the world, and she would never want to let him down. But despite all that, she would never try to be someone she was not. And he knew that. She thought about him sitting in his now probably big office and bossing some person around. It was actually a rather fun mental image. She nodded at what he said about the workers and how he could continue his research.

His research. Morgana wondered briefly how long he'd been talking about his research. It had to be ages ago that he started talking about it, but never really said what it was to Morgana. She had her suspicions, but she had absolutely no way of telling which one was the correct one. Mordred was the one who knew everything about everyone, while Morgana only knew many things about most people. So she could never deduce what it was that he researched. She remembered that something had changed after her first year at Hogwarts, and his first year as an Unspeakable. It seemed as if he had learned something new, and he was in the middle of processing it. But what, Morgana had no idea of. And this was one of the few things she was seriously curious about, as well as knowing she'd most likely never learn what it was.

She settled in to reading again, the silence falling over them. She wondered if he'd be saying anything else now, and something told her that he truly wanted to, but he couldn't bring himself to it. She looked over the rim of the journal and saw that he had started reading again himself. She ought to tell him. She should. But she didn't want to. Not right now. Not while she still didn't quite know herself. So she settled comfortably in the couch, and happened upon a smile as her father's hand warmed her feet.
