Hunter VanDerberg - Second Year
Blake Ralston - Second Year
Kynan Walters - Fourth Year

Time: November, 2027

Not all treasure is silver and gold. Sometimes it is - but most of the time, it's food. In Hunter's case, food beats silver and gold every single time. The only thing that money is good for is to buy food. But the driving force is always food. That meant that people didn't really go to school and get jobs so that they could make money - the only reason people worked was so that they could afford to buy more and better tasting food than everyone else. So naturally, when Hunter found out that there was a way to get into the kitchens at Hogwarts and eat as much food as he wanted whenever he wanted, without paying a dime for it, he immediately set out to find out how to get there.

Of course, he'd immediately taken his quest to Kynan. Because Kynan loved food more than anyone Hunter had ever met. If he couldn't help them, nobody could. And of course, he was more than willing to help because it meant one more trip to the kitchens for Kynan. Hunter was supposed to meet him in the Gryffindor common room so that Kynan could show him the way. Since it was the weekend, they were going early so that nobody would be out to follow them. Because technically students weren't supposed to be in the kitchens.

Hunter was up before he needed to be. He was used to waking up early since the summer had only ended a month or so ago. By the time the holidays came, he would be able to sleep in a bit, but for now he was still waking up early like he would at home on the farm. Blake was still sleeping, though. "Oy, get up Sleeping Beauty!" Hunter said, chucking one of his pillows at his friend. "I've let you sleep long enough, you git! We've got some exploring to do!" Hunter sat impatiently on his bed while he waited for his friend to wake up.

When Blake had finally managed to get himself put together, Hunter darted out of the dormitory with his friend in tow. He knew that Blake was just as excited to find the kitchens as he was, even if he hadn't gotten up at the crack of dawn like Hunter. When they reached the common room, Kynan wasn't there yet, so Hunter plopped casually down on a couch to wait. "This is going to be awesome!" he said brightly. "Kynan better hurry up, or I'll go up there and dump water on him or something," Hunter added, glancing skeptically at the stairs. Kynan didn't seem like the type to wake up early. "Oh, guess what?! I just found out that we might be going on a trip to Ireland for Christmas to visit some family! Maybe I'll be able to visit Aoife, then, if it works out!" He was a bit curious to see where Aoife lived, since she had a farm as well. "What does your family do for Christmas, anyway?" Hunter asked curiously, making conversation while they waited for Kynan. "You stayed here last year, didn't you?"

This thread is closed to Blake and Kynan

Nasim, can you wait to reply with Kynan until Blake and Hunter have talked about Blake's family? Thanks!

Blake was shaken awake in what appeared to be the middle of the night. “What is it, who’s attacking?” Blake called out in his sleepy confused state. He rolled over and tried to go back to sleep when he realised it was Hunter. What was wrong with him? It was still dark out for crying out loud. Blake tried to take cover under his blanket, but the boy was relentless. When he used the term ‘sleeping beauty,’ that put some life into Blake as he clambered out of the bed “sorry, we’re not all perfect sheep breeders like you.” Blake said, making reference to the fact that Hunter was a farmer of some sort. “I need my sleep to keep this beautiful face in shape. Not my fault if you have no interest in staying handsome like me.” He shrugged at Hunter, still slightly disgruntled at the fact of being dragged out of bed at an ungodly hour at the weekend.

“What time is it anyway?” he asked, stifling a yawn, as they made their way into the common room where they were to await Kynan’s arrival. Apparently the boy knew where the kitchens were and they were going to go there today! Blake perked up a bit at this fact. “Well where is Kynan then?” He asked looked around the completely deserted room. Of course it was empty; most sane people were still asleep! “Is Kynan even coming?” Blake turned to Hunter, knowing about his reputation for turning up to class and wondered if it extended into rising early on a Saturday morning. That water might be necessary after all, Blake was thinking as he sat in the comfy seat next to Hunter and immediately regretted it as he felt the sleepiness take over once more.

But Hunter began talking about a trip to Ireland and he sat up, in an attempt to listen to what he had to say. “Do you have Irish blood?” Blake asked, slightly surprised. But then again it probably explained the fact of how he seemed to understand Aoife better than anyone. Weird Irish Viking blood and all that. Blake began rubbing sleep from his eyes, beginning to feel uncomfortable as he could see where the conversation was going. “Oh you know, the usual…,” What did he do for Christmas or more importantly what did most families do for Christmas? “Yeah I’ll probably just stay here again.” Blake replied, trying to keep the shame and embarrassment from his voice. He knew it wasn’t his fault for having no parents, but running away from foster home after foster home he wasn’t entirely guilt free from. “Well truth be told, I’ve never really had a proper Christmas, in a traditional sense of the word.” Blake admitted slowly, avoiding eye contact, hoping Hunter would understand what he was trying to say and that would be that. He hated talking about this sort of stuff with a passion and had usually successfully avoided it up until this point. Either by staying silent when family topics came up or by leaving the group. Neither were really an option now though and Blake had a funny feeling that Hunter wasn’t really going to drop it. C’mon Kynan, hurry up. Blake urgerd desperately to himself as he glanced up towards the dormitory willing him to just appear.

Hunter snorted at Blake's outburst when the pillow collided with his face. "Sheep breeder?" Hunter asked as his friend finally woke up. "That's the best you can come up with? It's not that early, come on!" Hunter burst into laughter at Blake's statement about getting enough beauty sleep. "Oh, is that why you get the most awesome nicknames from the ladies, Blakey?" It wasn't okay for Ryan to call Blake that, but Hunter could when Ryan wasn't around because it was funny then.

"Around six," Hunter said when Blake asked him what time it was. Then he was questioning whether Kynan would actually turn up. "Who knows. He's probably still sleeping, that git." Hunter really wasn't kidding about giving him a wakeup call, though. "Let's give him a few more minutes before we go get him." Hunter wasn't going to wait all morning for Kynan, though. The Kitchens were too important to miss out on! "Don't get too comfortable," Hunter warned his friend as he saw him sink into the couch.

He had to give Blake credit, though, because he actually sat up and tried to stay awake. "I don't have Irish blood. Mum's sister, my aunt, married some Irish bloke. So my cousins are Irish." He wasn't sure that he wanted to be Irish after knowing Aoife. He furrowed his brow as Blake answered his question rather generally and said that he'd stay at Hogwarts again for the holidays. He was just about to ask why when the other boy added that he'd never had a proper Christmas.

"Never?" he asked. "Doesn't your family celebrate Christmas?" Hunter couldn't remember Blake ever saying if his family celebrated Christmas or not. Now that he thought of it, he couldn't remember Blake ever saying anything about his family ever... Maybe he had a bad family that he didn't like to talk about? Or maybe he didn't have a family. Either way, after thinking about it, Hunter felt a bit bad for asking. "You don't have to answer that if you don't want to," he said a bit apologetically. Yeah, he was a curious second year, but he didn't want to make Blake feel bad. If he didn't want to tell him, Hunter would respect that. At least for now.

TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan Empty
PostSubject: Re: TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan   TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan EmptySat Mar 01, 2014 11:36 pm

Blake groaned to himself, tossing a cushion at Hunter’s smug face when he said it was  6 am. Six in the morning, what did people even do at this time? Blake was sure he’d never been up this early before, he was also certain Kynan never had seen the sunrise, never mind 6 am. “Yes, that git.” Blake agreed with Hunter, sarcastically agreeing with him and he rolled his eyes just for affect. Blake wanted to go and get Kynan immediately before giving him a chance to wake up. Throwing water on people was always fun. Although he could see Kynan being liable to cursing them or something if they did manage to eventually wake him up. “Why can’t we go now?” Blake complained, changing his tune as he was getting hungrier sitting there thinking about all the gourmet food he was about to experience. It would probably be the most food he would ever have see in his life! Blake had been dreaming about this day since the first evening back at Hogwarts when Hunter had brought up the kitchens and they had vowed to go there. A big grin was developing on Blake’s face as his mind was drifting in and out of consciousness as he began dreaming of all the delicacies he had ever heard of in his life.

“Ha, I’m sure being Irish isn’t that bad!” Blake laughed at Hunter’s reaction to him denying it without hesitation. “I’m sure not all of them are carbon copies of Aoife!” He joked, privately hoping they really weren’t. He wasn’t too sure if he had ever come across anyone else that was Irish, but he thought he was happy enough with the people he was surrounded by. He had one Aoife in his life, and that was enough!

Blake knew he should have said nothing and pretended to be normal, just as he usually, did when Hunter looked at him in shock. He really hoped that wasn’t sympathy forming on his face, Blake thought sourly to himself. He didn’t need anyone’s pity and would rather keep his personal problems private.

But maybe Hunter was just being a friend, Blake reasoned with himself as he made it clear he didn’t have to answer. Blake was feeling pretty agitated at this stage as he toyed with the idea of telling Hunter. He really hoped it wasn’t about to change their friendship, but then again Hunter didn’t seem to care about that type of stuff, Blake reasoned once more. Taking a deep breath the words came tumbling out of his mouth before he could stop them. “Well, truth be told I don't have a family. Well I do, everyone obviously does. I just don't know mine. I've always been in the system, with one foster home or another. Or the streets, more recently as no one seems to want me now. I don't remember my parents at all." According to sources his father had always been a deadbeat and his mother died when he was only a few months. "I don't even know what really happened to them or if anything made them leave. They just abandoned me." Blake said, the last few words really bringing realisation to Blake of what he was saying to Hunter. Technically his mother hadn't intentionally abandoned him, but that was what it felt like to him. Years of hurt and anger made him blinded and spiteful towards her, resenting her for not living for him. Blake finally looked up at Hunter, the nerves evident from his features as waited to see what the first friend he had ever shared this information with had to say.

“You’re not going to tell anyone?” Blake half pleaded with Hunter, he really didn’t need Aoife or any of the others getting wind of this. Everyone would know within a day if that was the case, gossip spread like wild fire in the castle.

TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan Empty
PostSubject: Re: TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan   TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan EmptyMon Mar 03, 2014 4:39 am

"Because we only know that the kitchens are in the basement. We don't know how to get in," Hunter reasoned when Blake complained about wanting to go immediately. "We won't find it without Kynan." At least Blake seemed to be a bit wider awake now. Hunter could understand why - visiting the kitchens was a particularly exciting adventure that he and Blake had been planning on since their first day back. "And we're better off at least giving him a chance to wake up so that we might just manage to avoid making him angry by waking him up." Who was he kidding? Kynan wouldn't be waking up on his own any time soon. Hunter kicked his feet up onto the coffee table, deciding to wait a few minutes longer.

Hunter laughed when Blake joked that all Irish people weren't necessarily bad like Aoife. "Well, if my cousins are anything to go by, they're all just as crazy as Aoife," he said, chuckling. "And Aoife's not that bad, you know. I don't see why you two don't get along better." Honestly. It made absolutely no sense. Aoife was really cool, and Blake was really cool. And obviously Hunter was really cool. So it would make sense for the three of them to be really cool friends. But Blake and Aoife didn't seem to like being around each other, so he usually hung out with them separately.

Hunter could see his friend's internal debate on his face, and he realized that he'd definitely hit a touchy subject. Why hadn't he seen it before? He was so unobservant. He expected Blake to write it off or choose not to answer, but to Hunter's surprise the other boy was soon rambling off his life story. Hunter furrowed his brow in thought as Blake told him about being orphaned by his parents. Honestly, he hadn't thought that he'd touched on something quite that serious.

"You don't have any family?" He was likely pushing his luck by asking questions, but he had a feeling Blake wouldn't appreciate him acting abnormally because of the revelation. Hunter couldn't imagine what it would be like to not have a family. He frowned as Blake added that he'd been living on the streets recently. And here Hunter was with his huge, happy family, while Blake had nobody. "I'm sorry that I brought it up, mate," he said, shaking his head. "But I'm glad you told me."

Blake seemed worried that Hunter would repeat what he heard. "Of course I won't tell anyone," Hunter responded quickly. It was hardly his secret to tell. And Hunter was good at keeping secrets when he needed to. "I swear." But where did Blake even go over summer holidays then? Did he really just go and wander around on the streets? How miserable a summer that must be, with no friends or decent food. So the next words fell from Hunter's lips easily.

"Hey, maybe you can come and stay with us next summer! At least for a bit!" he exclaimed brightly as the idea popped into his head. "Mum probably wouldn't mind! She loves visitors. And you don't exactly have anyone to tell you that you can't!" Hunter joked. Okay, that might have been insensitive, but Hunter was hardly concerned about being sensitive. "Summer would be way less boring then!" Hopefully Blake wouldn't take the suggestion as a pity offer, because it really wasn't. It would be awesome to have Blake stay over!

Okay, they'd been officially waiting way too long. "Alright, let's go get him," Hunter sighed in defeat, heaving himself to his feet. "He must still be sleeping."

PostSubject: Re: TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan   TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan EmptyThu Mar 06, 2014 10:45 pm

Blake decided to stay quiet on the whole Aoife subject, it was probably best not to open that can of worms or they had the potential to be there all morning.

Blake broke out into a grin when Hunter promised not to tell anyone. He also felt a lot better, maybe conversations about family would be a lot less uncomfortable around him now. He wondered why he was so worried in the first place about telling someone, especially when that person was Hunter. He knew his secret was safe with him. "Thanks, that'd be awesome!" If the rest of Hunter's family were anywhere as near cool as the VanDerberg's he had met he knew it would be one summer not to miss. Also, anything was better than the last summer he had endured. He could also get to spend more time with Lyn, and try and make up for their disastrous first meeting.  He guessed he'd be making that up for sometime. "As long as there are no sheep on your farm!" Blake added with a grin. He had heard enough about sheep to last a lifetime. "Hey!" Blake exclaimed, punching Hunter in the arm as he feigned hurt at Hunter's comment at no one being able to dictate what he could do for the summer. "Give me a break! You've known all of five minutes and look at the abuse I'm getting!" Blake ranted on laughing at Hunter's comment. "Thanks for listening though." Blake said sincerely. "And, you know, understanding." He said a little more awkwardly.

At Hunter's mention of waking up Kynan Blake shot of from his seat. "I'll do the honours!" Blake thought this was worth getting up early for! He grabbed a bucket, making sure it was full of ice cold water as he made his way up to the fourth year boy’s dormitory. Closely followed by Hunter, he hoped. He gestured in the direction of what he hoped was Kynan's bed; dumping water on another fourth year was a perfect way to have a vendetta against you. Blake looked at the Gryffindor boy lying peacefully asleep, unknowing what was about to happen to him and Blake giggled silently to himself. “He looks like a sleeping angel.” He muttered under his breath to Hunter. Pity he wasn’t like that when he was awake! In fact he was about to be the complete opposite Blake figured. Unable to control himself from laughing for much longer Blake tossed the water on top of Kynan, rushing behind Hunter using him as a shield from Kynan's wrath which was definitely about to ensue.

TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan Empty
PostSubject: Re: TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan   TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan EmptyThu Mar 06, 2014 11:06 pm

Kynan was having a dream. Like, one of those dreams that seemed so real you were pretty sure they were reality. He was dreaming of sneaking into the Kitchens and every single House-Elf was actually someone he hated. Like Evan. And he kept ordering Evan around to make him food. But at one point, Evan fell asleep and when Kynan tried to shake him awake and get him to make some apple pie for him, it didn't work. So Kynan went to the cooker to take out the cooked apple pie, ready to eat it, when- cold, freezing water poured out of the oven and started filling the kitchens. "Aaaaaah!" Kynan was yelling.

Suddenly, he was awake in his four-poster bed and wet. Oh my god, I didn't have an accident, did I?! he thought, panicking and jumping up from his bed. The whole bed was wet and so was he. Kynan rubbed his eyes as they adjusted to the light and saw- Blake and Hunter? "What the hell was that for?!" he yelled, sure that he was waking up his room-mates. He noticed Blake was holding an empty bucket, and the two were laughing. "What did I d- oooooooooooooh..." Kynan was about to continue yelling but cut short because he remembered that he was supposed to help the two get to the Kitchens. He scratched his head a bit and raised his eyebrows. "I overslept, didn't I?" Nodding to himself, he pushed away the guilty thought of forgetting to set an alarm (not that he'd wake up to that anyway, he'd probably throw it out the window), and beamed.

"Let's go to the Kitchens!" Kynan exclaimed, optimistically and started walking out the dormitories like he wasn't soaked in freezing water and looking weird at all.

TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan Empty
PostSubject: Re: TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan   TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan EmptyMon Mar 10, 2014 3:32 pm

Blake was suspiciously quiet when Hunter brought up his not so great relationship with Aoife. "Another time, then," Hunter said, shrugging, indicating that he would probably bring up the topic again. Because Aoife and Blake were being stupid - and inconveniencing Hunter by refusing to just be friends.

Hunter grinned as Blake joked about abusing the subject too soon. "Hey, you might as well look at the bright side, mate," he laughed. At least Blake seemed to like the idea of staying with Hunter's family over summer. It looked as though the idea had cheered the situation up a bit. "We'd have loads of fun!" Hunter exclaimed, thinking of all the fun things that he did with his brother on the farm. You could meet my brother, Jack, too! Although, mum would probably put you to work... but that's okay, because I can prove how much manlier I am than you when you can't keep up!" Hunter grinned again at his own joke. "And sorry to tell you, but we do have sheep. I don't bother with them, though. Lyn and Lyra go and play with them and feed them and name them and stuff, but Jack and I do much cooler things."

Blake got a bit more serious and began to thank Hunter for listening about his parents. "Anytime, mate," Hunter said, shrugging. "We're friends. If I ever had something like that on my chest, I'd tell you, too." Mostly because Aoife was the loudest person on the planet, and Hunter wasn't sure whether she could keep it to herself - or take anything seriously ever. Blake was quieter, and a bit more logical of a choice to tell secrets to if Hunter really didn't want them getting out.

Thankfully, the air in the room got noticeably lighter when Hunter mentioned going to get Kynan. Before he even knew what was happening, Blake had rushed off up the stairs. Hunter rolled off the couch and followed him, a mischievous grin lighting up his face when he saw that Blake had actually fetched a bucket of water. "Brilliant!" They quickly found their way into the fourth year dormitory, and Hunter couldn't help but laugh at Blake's comment about Kynan looking like an angel. He covered his mouth with his shoulder to muffle his laughter, so as to not wake Kynan up before the water did. Then, Blake dumped the water onto Kynan and backtracked quickly behind Hunter. "Hey, some Gryffindor you are!" Hunter exclaimed to his friend who had left him to deal with Kynan's reaction.

But surprisingly, Kynan's reaction wasn't all that bad, aside from some yelling. Hunter found himself doubling over in laughter at the sight of the older boy dripping wet, trying to figure out what was going on. It didn't take long for Kynan to figure out why they'd woken him. "Yes, but we're not really surprised," Hunter said through his laughter when Kynan asked if he'd overslept. In a flash, though, Kynan was wide awake and heading out of the dorm to begin their adventure. "Aren't you going to change?" Hunter asked him, looking incredulously at his still soaking wet clothes. "Or dry off?"

PostSubject: Re: TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan   TERM 7 - Not all treasure is silver and gold - The Kitchens- Hunter, Blake, Kynan EmptyFri Mar 14, 2014 11:33 pm

“Well not all Gryffindor’s have to put their pride ahead of their safety!” Blake muttered to Hunter as he remained concealed. Not that Hunter was much good as a shield. They were pretty much the same height; Blake actually thought he was a few inches taller. But before he got the chance to sneakily compare their heights behind Hunter’s back, Kynan was spouting nonsense from his bed. Not that he was much more comprehendible when he was first awoken. First class example was Blake ten minutes ago when Hunter had woken him up. At least Hunter had done it in the nicest way possible. Hunter would’ve had bats attacking him, if he had of tried any other forms of waking him up.

Blake reappeared in Kynan’s eyeshot once it became apparent that they weren’t in immediate danger of being hexed and returned Kynan’s enthusiastic grin. “Sorry about the wake-up call, couldn’t resist.” He said shrugging; nodding his head in Hunter’s direction making it clear it was all his idea.

Blake laughed as he marched after Kynan in mock military style out the door with Hunter’s question ringing in his ears. “Typical Kynan, too lazy to change.” He shouted back at him, kind of glad that they didn’t have to wait around even longer. He was sure Kynan was probably too preoccupied with the thought of food to even notice he was sapping wet.
